TV: “The River” To Hit DVD Just Four Weeks After Season Finale

RiverABC40612 TV: The River To Hit DVD Just Four Weeks After Season Finale

On May 22nd, “The River” is coming to DVD. If you’re a fan of this show, you’ve been blessed. You have a short wait until you get to watch it again and again. I don’t know how someone can sit through even one episode and enjoy it enough to watch it again. Then again, I only saw the pilot. Did it get any better?

From Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, and the director of “Paranormal Activity” Oren Peli, a truly harrowing and hair-raising series comes to DVD. “The River: The Complete First Season” tells the tale of famed wildlife explorer and TV personality Dr. Emmet Cole who went looking for magic deep in the uncharted Amazon and never returned. Now, six months after he vanished, a brave crew of family, old friends and new acquaintances embark on a mysterious and deadly journey to find him in the deepest and darkest depths of South America. The DVD is filled with exclusive bonus features, including deleted scenes that draw audiences further into this heart-pounding adventure.

As TV seasons go the DVD is fairly inexpensive at $29.99

TV: ABC Talks Canceling ‘The River,’ Transitioning To Netflix

river020312 TV: ABC Talks Canceling The River, Transitioning To Netflix

Is network TV dying? We may finally be witnesses to the rise of streaming original content.

Netflix, who is already developing Eli Roth’s original series “Hemlock Grove,” and is in talks with 20th Century Fox TV about possibly picking up recently cancelled “Terra Nova,” may also be eying another freshman drama that is facing cancellation: ABC’s “The River.”

Deadline reports that the streaming giant has had conversations with “The River” producer ABC Studios about the possibility of continuing the thriller/horror series on Netflix. Sources stress that the talks are exploratory at this point in the context of a larger conversation between ABC Studios and Netflix.

From my own perspective, this is exactly what “The River” should have been in the first place. The constant commercial breaks tear us away from any tension the show builds, while having it air on prime time forces the show to veer away from any violent content.

It should also b clear that, unlike “Terra Nova,” “The River” has not been officially canceled by ABC, though that is considered a foregone conclusion. This could actually turn into a positive situation if transitioned correctly.

Have you been watching “The River”? What do you think? READ MORE

Making Popcorn With ‘Chernobyl Diaries’!

CherDiariesLand31612 Making Popcorn With Chernobyl Diaries!

Last week we got a look at the trailer and poster for Chernobyl Diaries, the Oren Peli and Brian Witten-produced horror survival film directed by Brad Parker. Today the LA Times has a brief interview with Andrew Kosove of Alcon Entertainment, who owns the North American rights.

It’s an interesting read because it at least attempts to tackle the inherent issues of fashioning a piece of entertainment out of a real-world tragedy. Kosove asserts that offending survivors of the disaster (families of the victims) is not on his agenda. “It’s a popcorn film. I don’t think the movie takes itself so seriously as to tread on those real disasters.” I don’t really have an opinion about this. The film’s tagline is “experience the fallout” which I suppose could be read as kind of tacky, but then again I don’t think there’s much that should be off limits. Humor heals, I suppose.

As for why he thinks its a good setting for a film? “It’s not like going to Club Med in Barbados. It’s frozen in time, and it’s visually arresting.” The article also touches upon the extreme tourism industry that has cropped up around the site. Apparently you can purchase a day pass to check out the city of Prypiat. As someone who avoids the backscatter mating at the airport, I don’t think I’ll be signing up for that one.

In theaters May 28 from FilmNation, “A group of friends become stranded in an eerie and desolate city. Years before in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, nature has begun to reclaim everything. As the sun sets on this radioactive ghost town, inhuman cries cut through the night air. It seems they are not alone.” It stars Jonathan Sadowski, Devin Kelley, Jesse McCartney, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Nathan Phillips, Ingrid Bolso Berdal and Dimitry Diatchenko.

[Special Report] So I Watched ‘Paranormal Activity 3′ At The House It Was Filmed In…

ParanormalLand22912 [Special Report] So I Watched Paranormal Activity 3 At The House It Was Filmed In...

To help celebrate the DVD/Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity 3, Paramount recently held a contest in which two contest winners would be flown out to LA to attend a special viewing of the film at the house in which it was filmed. The winners were picked based on trivia knowledge of the franchise and, in this instance, were flown in from Michigan. They were treated to an almost private viewing of the film, dinner and a few special “guests”.

Since the house had already been gussied up for the occasion we were asked if we wanted to come along and check it out. PA3 is my favorite film in the franchise and I felt that the house lent the film a lot of personality so it was kind of a no-brainer to attend.

TV: ABC’s ‘The River’ Has “Soft” Premiere

river020312 TV: ABCs The River Has Soft Premiere

One thing about watching a new TV series is that you risk getting attached, only to have it canceled before the debut season ends. This is why I typically wait until the second season is announced to jump aboard (although I took the day one dive with “American Horror Story” and “The Walking Dead”).

THR writes that the two-hour premiere of ABC’s “The River,” which, while soft in its returns and declining every half hour, still topped last season’s comparable mid-season time slot entry, “Off The Map.”

“The River” pulled in a 2.4 among adults 18-49, with a 2.5 at 9:00 p.m. and a 2.2 at 10:00 p.m.., and gave the net its strongest showing in the time slot since the fall finale of “Dancing With the Stars.” ABC averaged a 2.4 among 18-49-ers for the night and 7.6 million viewers.

While off to a weak start, there’s still plenty of hope for the new series from Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli — but it can just as easily capsize into the abyss… READ MORE

‘Paranormal Activity 3′ And What I Learned At My “Tea With Toby”

Paranormal Activity 3 And What I Learned At My Tea With Toby

Last week Paramount held a “Tea With Toby” at The Roosevelt Hotel in celebrate today’s DVD/Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity 3.

What was “Tea With Toby”? It was a press event where I (among other journalists) was summoned to the hotel for a late afternoon Tea. Complete with sandwiches, smoked salmon, little pastries – what I had always imagined Tea being like in England.

We were there to discuss the film (and the franchise) with Oren Peli, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Christopher Smith, Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown. While it was a breezy and enjoyable 90 minutes, the gracious and polite Peli lived up to his notoriously tight-lipped reputation in regard to any new info on the series. And the cast followed suit.

But still, fun was had and, if anything, I walked away more energized to revisit the franchise. Hit the jump for the full report! READ MORE

Paramount is going out of their way to let you know that Paranormal Activity 3 debuts on January 24, 2012 from Paramount Home Entertainment in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with UltraViolet and a Digital Copy.

This time, they’ve unloaded two scenes deleted from the theatrical cut of the film that will be included in the supplements of the Blu (if not in the extended cut of the film itself).

I, among other journalists, recently sat down for tea with Oren Peli, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Christopher Smith, Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown to discuss the film’s home video release and try to get answers out of them regarding the future of the franchise. Look for that article to hit closer to release date.

CONFIRMED. After hitting a home run with Paranormal Activity 3, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned that both Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman will be returning to direct Paranormal Activity 4 for Paramount Pictures. I have yet to confirm if the duo are in final talks or if the ink has dried*, and have asked Mr. Disgusting to dig into this for me.

The studio slated the return of Katie, Kristi and the not-so-friendly ghost Toby for October 19, 2012.

Joost and Schulman co-directed Catfish independently before it was acquired by Universal. They then boarded the mega-franchise created by San Diego director Oren Peli. [Interview] Paranormal Activity 3 Creator/Producer Oren Peli!

Having been one of the catalysts behind the film’s success, Bloody Disgusting and Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli go way back. We’ve chatted it up on many occasions, which is why I know that he’s one of the most difficult interviews on the planet. It doesn’t help that the demonic franchise is shrouded in secrecy.

With Paranormal Activity 3 arriving in theaters tonight at midnight, I believe I did a pretty solid job this time around in getting Peli to reveal some insight into the latest scarefest and how the decisions were made. Get the dirt inside and return on opening weekend to write your reviews to tell Paramount and the filmmakers what YOU thought. READ MORE

Look, It’s the Number Three, It MUST Be a New ‘Paranormal Activity’ Movie!

In an easy case of hit-whoring, inside you’ll find the Spanish teaser poster for Paranormal Activity 3. While Aullidos claims its authenticity, domestic studio reps won’t commit. Either way, it’s kinda boring. It’s a slightly arrogant one sheet as it assumes that the graphic of the number three is iconic enough that passer byers will known immediately that it’s for a third Paranormal Activity. It took Lionsgate six Saw movies to grow those kind of balls.

From Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Paramount will release in theaters October 21, 2011.

Comic-Con ’11: ‘Paranormal Activity 3′ Viral/Trailer Premiere!

Franchise creator and producer Oren Peli tells us that filming is currently underway and that it’s been a challenge making sure they do the fans right: “The challenge we are dealing with is to create same kind of dreaded feeling of terror and horror, while at the same time also [delivering] something fresh, different and unique,” he told Bloody Disgusting talking about creating “a new experience that delicately balances fear and originality. “ hoping fans will be pleasantly pleased.” This viral stunt is their way of giving the teaser directly to the fans, before theaters, and saying “thank you” for the continued support.

Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman came aboard this past May to direct from a screenplay by Christopher B. Landon (Disturbia).

‘Paranormal Activity 2′ Writer Returning For Next Entry

Earlier this year, a press release went out stating that Chris Landon would once again join forces with Michael Perry to write Paranormal Activity 3, though we learned that was not the case shortly thereafter. Now, after rumors of Roger Avary writing and Paul Feig directing were quickly debunked, it looks like Landon is once again attached to the film. The tidbit was casually mentioned in an article about the writer signing to a new agency, so it has not been “officially” confirmed thus far. Someone has got to be writing it at this point though, since it has to be in the can and on the big screen by October 21, 2011.

Paramount Pictures Punching Up ‘Paranormal’ Director’s ‘Area 51′

Bloody Disgusting is being told that director/actor Chris Denham has been hired to do some rewrites on Area 51, Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli’s sophomore effort that will also go back behind cameras to shoot some addition footage.

The film, which stars Reid Warner, Darrin Bragg, and Ben Rovner, employs the “found footage” narrative structure that Peli used in Paranormal Activity to tell the story of three teens whose curiosity leads them to the notorious Area 51 portion of Nellis Air Force Base in the Nevada desert.

As we always like to remind readers, additional photography isn’t always a negative. Many times it’s to add more gore, an intense scene, or to just string together the story a bit more. Paramount also had Super 8 on their release schedule, so it seemed kind of odd to release two similar themed (yet completely polar opposite in budgetary costs) films in the same quarter. I personally cannot wait to see what Peli’s second directorial effort produces.

Since the release of Paranormal, Peli has also produced Insidious and Rob Zombie’s forthcoming The Lords of Salem. He is also the creator/producer on ABC’s forthcoming pilot “The River”. Big stuff!

Being directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Orphan, House of Wax), Hope stars as Tess, a world traveler and top-notch producer who, six months after her TV explorer husband Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood) goes missing in the Amazon, receives a signal from his beacon. Convinced that Emmet is alive, Tess forces her reluctant son Lincoln (Joe Anderson) to abandon his medical studies and lead a rescue expedition.
