TV: Genre Vet Heads to the Deep Amazon ‘River’

Deadline is reporting that British actor Joe Anderson (The Ruins, The Crazies, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1/2, and The Grey) has landed the lead in ABC’s drama pilot “The River” from Orphan and House of Wax director Jaume Collet-Serra.

The horror thriller, from DreamWorks TV, ABC Studios and Paranormal Activity mastermind Oren Peli, centers on Lincoln Cole (Anderson) who, after his famous TV explorer father goes missing way up the Amazon, reluctantly abandons his medical studies and follows in his father’s footsteps – accompanied by a small camera crew, and with Something Deadly in the water, waiting for him.

Anderson joins the previously announced Eloise Mumford.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Paranormal Activity 2′

In an age where the common train of thought for sequels is bigger equals better, it’s surprising that Paranormal Activity 2‘s problems don’t stem from inflated egos and bloated budgets. It’s not that I expected Robot Heaven or a flood of new villains in Tod Williams’ follow-up to Oren Peli’s minimalist blockbuster, but I’m shocked that Tinseltown’s proclivity towards it’s tried-and-true methods are almost completely absent. Looking at it from a strictly genre standpoint, it does indeed match or double the body count of the original (depending on which version you saw), and the scares are a bit more elaborate, but in the end, its rules and confines aren’t changed much, save for one notable (and spoilerific) exception. Like REC 2, it furthers the mythology of the franchise with a few surprises, and will possibly change your perception of previously seen events, putting it on the same level as its predecessor; nothing more, nothing less.

Rumor Control: ‘Disturbia’ Writer Pens ‘Paranormal Activity 3′

Update: Apparently the press release for ‘Burning Palms’ and IMDB were wrong in listing Landon as a writer. Official update forthcoming. Christopher B. Landon (Disturbia, Blood and Chocolate – and director of the forthcoming Burning Palms) and Michael R. Perry are both responsible for penning Paranormal Activity 3 for Room 101, Paramount Pictures and producer Oren Peli, writes IMDB and the Burning Palms press release. Doing a little research, while Perry is listed on IMDB as the writer of Paranormal Activity 2, Landon is now also listed as a participant. I guess you can say they’re reteaming for the trilogy? Story details for the next film is being held under lock and key, but Paramount has officially announced an October 21, 2011 release date.

Oren Peli To Break Out of Found-Footage Game With ‘Eliza Graves’

With another found-footage film in the can (Area 51) and a verite TV show on the way (The River), I was starting to wonder if Oren Peli was interested in doing a traditional narrative. Well, it seems he is, and he’s going to one of the masters for the source material. According to Variety, Peli will helm Eliza Graves, which is based on a short story by none other than Edgar Allan Poe (except unlike Variety, we spell his name right. Glad these guys are considered the experts), and concerns a Harvard Medical grad taking on a job at an asylum which, unbeknownst to him, has been taken over by the inmates. Mel Gibson is one of the producers; I assume he will also be on hand as a technical advisor to the actors playing crazed lunatics. More on Eliza as we hear it…

Paranormal Activity (limited)
