Lawsuit Claims Producers Of ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Stole Pitch Ideas
A lawsuit has been filed against Paramount and the producers of Paranormal Activity 4 alleging they stole ideas and story elements from a pitch meeting. Per THR, “Writer-director Michael Costanza has sued Paramount and producers of Paranormal Activity 4 claiming that the film used specific concepts from his work without permission and without credit or compensation.” Costanza also wrote and directed The Collingswood Story.
This meeting seems to have taken place around the development period of Paranormal Activity 2, since he submitted his take back in 2010. “Costanza says he was told at the time that producers Steven Schneider and Spencer Medof were not interested in his concepts… He now says that the story he wanted to tell is almost identical to what was later used in ‘Paranormal Activity 4′… Costanza is suing for unspecified damages and an order forcing the defendants to destroy all materials based on his concepts.”
Costanza also alleges that PA4 uses his “material [which] included details of webcam chats by characters in their late teens.”
Needless to say this is a complicated manner and these kind of lawsuits happen with a fair degree of regularity. We’ll keep you informed in regard to any developments.
[B-D Review] ‘A Haunted House’ is Impossible to Find Amusing
Reviewed by Mike Ferraro
Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) play a couple about to open a new chapter in their relationship when they decide to move in together. Malcolm, of course, decides to turn a camera on and record his new lifestyle with his significant other. However, it is Kisha who seems to feel the presence of something supernatural as soon as she steps foot in the new house.
A Haunted House, written by Rick Alvarez and Marlon Wayans, directed by newcomer Michael Tiddes, makes no attempts to be an original entry in an otherwise dead spoof genre. It’s full of jokes only a failed stand-up comedian could deliver while performing at a lower-end buffet in Vegas. READ MORE
[DVD Review] Few Scares In ‘Paranormal Activity 4′
After a recap of the events of the second film, Paranormal Activity 4 starts on Halloween 2011. This gives us an opportune and legitimate reason for something to be recorded. However we are already getting into that far fetched territory. While a holiday may be reason for a home video, when we push beyond that and delve into teenagers recording themselves – be it at a party or during a simple video chat- we’re already going too far. The point is that the Paranormal Activity movies have gotten to a severe level of abuse. There is simply no legitimate reason for any of these characters to be recording their every move. READ MORE
[Remember This?] Oren Peli’s ‘Area 51′?
Hot off the success of Paranormal Activity, director Oren Peli embarked on his second outing behind the camera, Area 51. That was four years ago.
Isn’t it strange that the above paragraph could easily be the opening crawl for its own found footage movie? Of course, Oren Peli didn’t disappear. Paranormal Activity 2, 3 and 4 have since been released (he was involved with all of them to varying degrees). He’s had a big network TV show, “The River.” He wrote and produced The Chernobyl Diaries and he’s also a producer on Rob Zombie’s upcoming Lords Of Salem.
His producing partner on Area 51 (and the PA films), Jason Blum, recently had some massive success with Insidious and Sinister and is currently shooting Insidious: Chapter 2. Back in 2011 Blum went on record about the project and the duo’s very busy dance card seemed to be interfering a bit with its release, “Area 51′ is like ‘Paranormal Activity’. The additional photography for ‘PA’, we went back 50 times. The great thing about doing extra shooting for inexpensive movies is that the cost is low, so we screen and shoot and screen and shoot. Oren and I were pulled away from ‘Area 51′ a lot for the second ‘PA’. Once that came out, we ramped up on ‘Area 51′ again. I anticipate the movie will be mostly done in about three or four months.”
Those three or four months have come and gone. So… what do we know about the film? READ MORE

[Editorial] The Wolfman Takes On Remakes!!
By The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards).
You’re sitting there in the movie theater with your Junior Mints, or in the case of psychopaths, sitting there with Dots, waiting for the movie to start. You have a terrifying debate with yourself for ten seconds while you try to determine whether the lights in the theater are actually dimming or maybe you’re having a stroke. Once that bright green screen pops up, proving that your brain does indeed have enough oxygen, you catch a glimpse of some of Hollywood’s newest garbage. Between romantic comedies and animated adventures starring pop singers, it all looks like the same old stuff. Unexpectedly, a trailer pops up that seems to be pretty creepy, have some decent actors in it, and the credits tell you it’s from people who helped make other horror movies that you absolutely love. When the title is revealed, the entire audience groans, followed by nudging the person next to you and saying, “Can you believe they’re even making that movie?” Or maybe you went to this movie alone and angrily took out your phone to post your disdain on Twitter for everyone (read: not really anyone) to see. No folks, the title didn’t reveal that the trailer you just enjoyed was an M. Night Shyamalan joint, but instead, the movie is a remake, adaptation of, or sequel to something else. No matter what the source material is, nothing seems to cause fanboys to angrily roll their eyes more then finding out their favorite movie/book is getting a remake/adaptation/sequel. My advice to all of you is to quit your complaining about something you had absolutely no involvement in making and should focus your energy on revisiting the source material.

Watch Paramount’s Teaser For Their Latino ‘Paranormal Activity’ Spin-Off!
Back in October Bloody was the first to tell you that Paramount Pictures had planning something special for their October 19th release of Paranormal Activity 4. Fans who stayed post-credits were treated to a short clip teasing the 2013 release of the studio’s unnamed Latino Paranormal Activity spin-off. While working on this morning’s 2013 studio preview, we came across said teaser and have shared it below alongside a supposed translation!
The film was first reported on in April. Christopher Landon (Disturbia) will write and direct the project, described by sources as a “cousin” to the Paranormal movies but actually not a sequel or reboot. The movie will be Latino-themed, will star a Latino cast and will tackle Catholic-based paranormal mythology. It will not, however, be in Spanish. Landon also penned both Paranormal Activity 2 and 3.
PA4, from creator/producer Oren Peli, utilized modern technology as it follows a family that lives across the street from a group of witches. Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who helmed the third film, directed once again. It made many of our “worst of 2013″ lists. READ MORE
[Remember This?] When People Lost Their Shit In Theaters?
Your job as a filmmaker is to create the illusion of reality, a place where a filmgoer can lose themselves in and forgot about their real life troubles. As easy as that sounds, creating a believable and immersive experience isn’t that simple.
Each and every year I dream for that impactful horror film, the one that makes me “feel” something. While I don’t necessarily believe in the notion of being “scared”, I do very much think that some films can be physically effective.
So, with the above title, I’m not asking if you remember a time when people lost their shit in theaters, but more-so if you recall the last time you had that experience. There’s literally nothing better than watching hundreds of people around you stand up, and scream and yell in terror right before your eyes.
We’ve all grown up to stories about how effective William Friedkin’s The Exorcist was back in 1973, but what has rocked the boat since then? Personally, one of the best experience I had was in viewing a “sneak peak” of DreamWorks’ The Ring back in 2002. I will never forget the audience reaction to Samara coming out of the television screen – you’d have thought she was literally in the theater. And while there was quite the reaction to Paranormal Activity in 2007, it wasn’t even close to what I witnessed back in 2002.
So I ask for you guys to tell me about your crazy theater experience. What movies had such an impact on patrons that they lost their shit? READ MORE
‘Paranormal Activity 5′ Gets A Release Date
Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 4 hit theaters last month and underperformed somewhat financially (it raked in about half of what PA3 made domestically). The lesson? Paranormal Activity 5 better be good!! It’s been said that this series has the chance to follow the Star Trek pattern of every other film actually being worthwhile.
Paramount announced the new sequel just days after PA4 opened (the film was still quote profitable despite the dip in grosses). And now they’ve announced the date. October 25th, 2013. That’s it. We know nothing else about the film and will probably continue to know almost nothing about the film until about a month before it comes out (of course we’ll break scoops though).
How would you rank the entries in the Paranormal Activity franchise?
[AFM '12] First Look At Blumhouse’s ‘Jessabelle’!!
Jessabelle, the new film from Saw VI and Saw 3D director Kevin Greutert and writer Robert Ben Garant (“Reno 911!”, A Night At The Museum) made an appearance at the American Film Market in Santa Monica today. Blumhouse (The Lords of Salem, Insidious, Paranormal Activity) is teaming up with Lionsgate for the project.
Sarah Snook, Joelle Carter (“Justified”), Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) Ana de la Reguera and Amber Stevens star in the film. Snook will play the terrified protag, while Webber will play her childhood friend who helps her uncover the truth about her family. The film is “about a girl who is forced to return to her father’s home in Louisiana when a car accident leaves her without the use of both her legs. What she finds there is a mystery surrounding her own birth and an angry ghost (named Jessabelle) that seems determined to destroy her.”

10 Top Calorie-Burning Horror Movies!!!
The Telegraph just published a report detailing the results of a study done by the University of Westminster on the calorie-burning efficacy of horror films. Per the report, watching some of these horror films burns can burn up nearly 200 calories a time. Or in more tangible terms, a horror movie can burn off a bar of chocolate.
According to the study, “viewers who put themselves through 90 minutes of adrenaline-pumping terror can use up as much as 113 calories, close to the amount burned during a half-hour walk and the equivalent to a chocolate bar.” The University of Westminster study measured the total energy expenditure of ten different people as they watched a selection of frightening movies.

Official ‘A Haunted House’ Image Gallery A Scream
It was recently announced that Open Road Films had acquired Michael Tiddes’ A Haunted House, co-written by and starring Marlon Wayans. We’re finally allowed to share the previously removed image gallery that depicts Wayans doing a whole lotta screamin’.
In the Wayans family tradition of successful movies like Scary Movie 1 & 2, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and, most recently, Dance Flick, Marlon Wayans co-wrote the script for A Haunted House, along with Rick Alvarez, who has produced several Wayans family movies.
“In an outrageous send up of the Paranormal Activity movies, The Devil Inside and other “found footage” movies, A Haunted House features young couple Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) who have just moved in to their dream house. As they settle in, they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that’s haunted, it’s Malcolm’s girlfriend who is possessed by a demon. Malcolm hires everyone from a priest to modern day ghostbusters to rid her of this unwelcome intruder, determined not to let the evil spirit ruin his relationship… or, more importantly, his sex life.”
Open Road Films will release A Haunted House – which stars Marlon Wayans, Cedric The Entertainer, David Koechner, Nick Swardson and Essence Atkins – nationwide on January 11, 2013. READ MORE
Watch The Hilarious “Honest” Trailer For ‘Paranormal Activity’!
I love Paranormal Activity, but that doesn’t mean I can’t get some cheap laughs out of Screen Junkie’s latest “Honest Trailer” that digs at Paramount’s Found Footage franchise and it’s astounding marketing work. “Experience the cheaper, less-interesting version of The Blair Witch Project,” jokes the faux trailer.
Paranormal Activity 4 is now in theaters. It’s not good. READ MORE
[BD Review] Brad Weighs In On ‘Paranormal Activity 4′!
Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity 4 hits theaters today, October 19. It’s directed by Catfish duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, whom also helmed Paranormal Activity 3. Unfortunately, this fourth entry has none of that film’s mojo. I unexpectedly loved the third entry, so my hopes were high for this new installment, so imagine my surprise when I sat in the theater aghast at how boring the overall film is (not to mention how flimsy the ending is).
But don’t take my word for it! Brad (Mr. Disgusting) weighs in with his review, “Paranormal Activity 4 is such drivel. It’s trite and cliche to its own fault, a lazy and cheap replica of a Paranormal Activity movie. If it weren’t for the performances by all three of the children, I may have found myself either sleeping or walking out of the theater – and this is saying a lot from the guy who gave Paranormal Activity 2 a pass.”
