Well over one year ago, Netflix and The Jim Henson Company announced that they were developing “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,“ a television series set to be a prequel to the 1982 film, The Dark Crystal.  The 10-episode fantasy adventure series takes place many years before the events of the film, and it will star an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™ and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer. And yes, we’re talking classic/old school puppets, with no CGI involved!

At New York Comic Con over the weekend, director Louis Leterrier promised that the only digital effects in the series will be green-screening to remove the puppeteers from view.

“We’re not using CGI on this one. It’s puppets, man. Puppets!” Leterrier told the crowd.

“People have asked what the newest technology we’re bringing to this is, and I say, ‘Well it’s actually really old technology: green screen.’ We’re removing puppeteers where they are physically moving the puppets from the outside. But Jim didn’t have the ability to do that at the time of the movie. So even though that’s a really old visual effects technique, it’s an advance on the film. We were so pleased that it’s still pure puppetry because if you take the puppeteers out, they’re still moved by the puppeteers.”

During the panel, Lisa Henson also spilled some more plot details.

“In the original movie, Jen and Kira stop at the Wall of Destiny and they see the ruins of what was once a beautiful Gefling culture, and we took that as a jumping of point for the whole series,” Henson teased. “What was that culture, what was lost, what was that beautiful Gefling civilization? It’s very developed, with a big canvas with many different group of Gelflings…it’s rich.”

“Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”

Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk) will executive produce the series and direct. “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” will be a Netflix original series produced by The Jim Henson Company and executive produced by Letterier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Longtime Henson collaborator Rita Peruggi will serve as producer and Henson’s Blanca Lista will serve as a co-executive producer. Leading the writing are co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach.
