Naughty Dog brought the first gameplay footage from the hotly-anticipated The Last of Us Part II to the ongoing E3. The footage that opened PlayStation’s press conference revealed Ellie as a playable character and showed her rocking a bow and knife as she snuck around in a forest battling various attackers. It looks phenomenal. Still no date as of this writing.

At its core, The Last of Us is still very much about Ellie and Joel, but for this reveal, we wanted to showcase several new characters that are integral to their next journey,” explained creator Neil Druckmann when first announced. “We’re sure you have many questions after watching this scene. We’re also pretty sure that we’re going to see all sorts of theories about whom these characters are, where and when this scene takes place, and how all of this fits into Ellie and Joel’s next story. For now, we’re keeping mum, but we’re excited to see what y’all make of this piece of the puzzle.”

“With all of Naughty Dog working on The Last of Us Part II, we’re making great headway into the project. From art, technology, gameplay, and story, this is by far our most ambitious game yet,” he continued. “You’re in for an intense, beautiful, harrowing, and emotionally moving ride. We’re extremely proud of the game we’re crafting.”

The Last of Us debuted on PS3 back in 2013 and was easily one of the best games of the year.

Ninja Theory had its own surprise at the Xbox Games Showcase, announcing that a third entry in the Hellblade series is in development, and unlike the previous entry, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, you won’t have to wait five years to play. Taking place after the events of Hellblade and Hellblade II, Senua is set in a fractured vision of purgatory, where a Celtic warrior (which is Senua) must fight to reach the afterlife and reunite with those she has loved and lost. Story details are purposely being kept under wraps for now, but players can expect to confront threats both within and without, master tactical combat to overcome nightmarish creatures, and explore a fantastical world shaped by myth and memory.

“It was important for us in developing Senua that we make a game Hellblade fans will love, but for it to be a game for new players, too,” explains Ninja Theory in a post to Steam. “If you’re a fan of story-led, premium action-adventure games with visceral combat, vivid worlds and fantastical enemies (including boss fights!), there’s a lot to be excited about in Senua.”
