Incredible Trailer Teases Neill Blomkamp’s Experimental Project ‘Oats: Volume 1’

Adapt or die. It’s as simple as that.

Neill Blomkamp, the man behind District 9 and Chappie, recently began teasing that he’d be making original, experimental short films available for purchase on Steam, which would serve as test concepts for potential features. We now know that he’s dubbed the venture Oats Studios, and the first wave of shorts just got a teaser trailer.

The 70-second trailer for “Oats: Volume 1” highlights an ongoing battle between humans and otherworldly creatures, and it has a certain Alien feel to it – interesting given that Blomkamp recently pitched a sequel to Aliens that will presumably never get made. Even more interesting is that Sigourney Weaver pops up in the trailer, seemingly playing a Ripley-esque character. Perhaps the experimental venture is allowing Blomkamp to scratch that Alien itch.

Check out the trailer below and look for “Oats: Volume 1” in the coming months.

Sure looks like him. Little girl looks like Newt. Really interesting!

      • Golic

        really unoriginal!

  • moebius2249

Guy needs to find a good writer to coloborate with. Shouldn’t be too hard at his level.

    • Mehliens

What level is that? Crappy hackster 9000?

      • moebius2249

The guy can direct, but he insists on writing all his material which has hurt his past efforts.

        • Mehliens

No he can’t. His cinematography, editing and general lack of originality is atrocious. But what else to expect from someone whose only trick is gun totting robots, power suits, and explosions whenever he possibly can to cover up for his lack of film making skills or when is heavy handed social commentary has run its course. His oeuvre looks like trailers for video games that have more depth then what he does.

        • Mehliens

Have you seen the trailer above? You need to check your eyes.

          • moebius2249

            Aye Mehliens , u need to f-off.

          • Mehliens

Why because I’m right? Please tell me in all seriousness you think thats great stuff? PLEASE

          • moebius2249

Guess we have to resort to the Ignore option, because Mehliens is miffed Blompkamp fkd his sister.

          • Mehliens

So salty now? Oww. My sister said Blomkamp has a small dick and smelled like your mother

        • Evan3

          Nailed it.

  • Mehliens

It looks like shit and it will be shit. This will make Chappie look like Taxi Driver in comparison. Cant wait to laugh my ass off at this

  • tetsuo666

Looks like every alien invasion trope known to man – D9 was his best effort, everything else since has been average at best. This looks terrible.

    • Mehliens

I can’t wait to see more of his stuff now. Its starting to become extremely funny

  • Mehliens

Funny how Blomkamp equates ‘experimental’ with every trope and cliche that exists and even reusing every single beat from his obvious ‘inspirations’ instead of being… you know, truly experimental. Further proof this man doesn’t have a shred of original talent

    • wabalicious

He’s talented enough to have you making several moronic comments on the article anyway, getting your panties in a twist. I’d be interested in seeing what you’e ever created, i bet it amounts to less than nothing, all you can do it moan repeatedly, childishly, because the films don’t match what you hoped they’d be. You’re a mouthy, arrogant idiot who uses too many big words straight from the online thesaurus.

      • Mehliens

Triggered. The discussian is about film and not about me. Just in case your brain isn’t able to figure this out. But I appreciate your crush on me.

        • wabalicious

Oooh, triggered! Fuck off with your worn-out internet buzzwords you sad cunt.

          • Mehliens

So intimate. Your crush really shows.

      • Mehliens

Oh and where have you been policing the people making moronic comments on the Covenant discussions? You were strangely absent but that just proves your crush on me so that’s ok.

      • Mehliens

Btw you are absolutely right about that he is talented enough so that it’s absolutely legitimate to criticize and comment on his work. That is the point of the whole thing here no matter if the words came from a thesaurus. So your own point makes your post irrelevant. I for one see this trailer for what it is and made
It public. If you don’t like that there is a ignore function

  • Nick Carton

    I’d watch it

  • J Jett

    this looks pretty good!

    • Mehliens

HAHAHAHA, how is that even remotely good in any conceivable way? Did you actually watch the footage? Its a smorgasbord of bad craftsmanship and cliche rolled into one steaming turd sandwich of someone with absolutely zero originality and no concept of what it actually means to direct. If you really think that that stuff is good I have to say I can’t take anything you say seriously anymore and it totally voids your criticism of Covenant. This is an embarrassment even for Blomkamp

      • Michael Huxel

Well thank god he doesn’t live and base his opinions and life around what you think, huh?

        • Mehliens

Sure. The same goes for his opinions that he expresses. Only that it seems to me that his bias towards Blomkamp is outright hypocritical when I compare his critical thought from say Covenant to this short which is laughably bad and cliched

          • J Jett

LOL! are you delusional Mehliens? i have never posted that i’m a big Blomkamp fan. in fact i’ve only seen part of DISTRICT 9 (it was meh…). i’ve seen ELYSIUM (meh…) and i’ve never seen CHAPPIE.

for the record i didn’t hate COVENANT (i plan on buying it when it’s released). i hated some things about it (David hogging the film) but there was a lot about it i liked and i’ve posted that in my comments. so where exactly did i post that Blomkamp is so great?

          • J Jett

Mehliens, are you Ridley Scott? that’s the only explanation that makes sense for why you are acting SOOOOO offended at any negative Ridley/COVENANT – positive Blomkamp comments.

          • Mehliens

Im quite critical towards Scotts blunders. If you ask me I’ll give a long list of things that were bad about both his new installments. And what makes it worse it’s stuff he gets wrong in many of his films. There are also certainly some positive things to be said about Blomkamp and his films but the bad outweighs the good by multiple factors. The hype he still gets for this excuse of a badly done fan fiction trailer is beyond comical. THATS WHY

          • Mehliens

It’s true you didn’t say that. It just seemed to me that you gave this farce of a trailer a pass when you were very vocal about the things in Covenant that you perceived as negative. You also dogged many of my clarifications in the other threads so I tried to corner you on this. As it seems I was to rash. Btw David has much more reason to hog the films he is in than Ripley had because he actually has an agenda while Ripley just gets dragged on from one part to the next and David has only been in two films and not four. Big difference.

        • J Jett

          thanx Michael! 🙂

          • Mehliens

Sorry it’s not my style to imply someone said something that wasn’t said. I think I was trying to condense why I reacted the way I did and it came out as I meant you personally. The collective non critical pass Blomkamp gets for this just boggles my mind. It’s a terrible trailer in my opinion and the article should have at least not have praised it with the words ‘incredible’ because it’s simply not. From a bunch of film journalists I’m expecting a little bit more than this lame hype of something that clearly deserves to be buried

  • I Am Colossus

Damn I love everything this guy does

  • KennyThaKilla
    • I can go for that 😉

  • TheSlitheryDee

I don’t understand what people have to complain about with Blomkamp. District 9 was incredible and Chappie was great. Robocop meets Short Circuit? What’s not to like?

    • moebius2249

“Chappie” wins the award for one of the stupidest casts in recent memory. He casted two rap stars who couldn’t act as the leads in that film, when he had Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver – in the same film!? The guy has talent, but he needs a good producer to keep him from making stupid decisions like that.

      • TheSlitheryDee

The lead was Chappie. While Die Antwoord isn’t my favourite group, they played their parts just fine for a Robocop/Short Circuit mash-up. This was far from the worst cast. Ever see Terminator Genisys? How about a great cast wasted (Robocop 2014)?

        • moebius2249

The box office didn’t see it that way.

          • TheSlitheryDee

I agree with you there. I don’t think people went into Chappie with the proper expectations. I recognized the connections with Robocop/Short Circuit immediately and throughout the movie. So I didn’t take it seriously but since we weren’t meant to, it all worked out.

      • Council_Communist

Die Antwoord were great! Do we have to keep making boilerplate scifi? Taking chances is why Blomkamp is interesting.

    • Evan3

That Matt Damon film was awful!

      • TheSlitheryDee

I wouldn’t say awful but I wasn’t big on that one.

        • Council_Communist

Blomkamp used scifi to comment on how corporate health care literally kills people. I thought it was great.

    • GunsOfNavarone

Chappie had it’s moments but overall it wasn’t in the same league as either Robocop or Short Circuit. Also, Die Antwoord ruined a good portion of the movie thanks to that strange casting choice. I don’t know whether I could put myself through that again.

    • Nahuel Benvenuto

District 9 is a pretty good movie, and the others are generic comercial entertainment because he was making them for hollywood

    • Stick Insect

chappie? thats a dog food brand lol

  • David Steiman

Well it’s kinda an Alien(s) clone. We have Ripley, Newt and Hicks based characters and almost the same corridors and lighting. Oh! And even something from Predator…

    • Mehliens

Blomkamps annoying obsession with the 80s classics… and video games aesthetics

      • Stick Insect

        and cgi

  • Council_Communist

I really like Blomkamp, all three of his major films. I hope this isn’t just a war film, like “Aliens” which was Rambo in Space.

    • Guts Is Berserk

“Aliens” is a classic among Science Fiction films. None of Blomkamps films have come close to measuring up to it.

      • Corey

I like District 9 more than Aliens. One man’s opinion though.

  • Mehliens

John Squires I would really like to know what’s incredible about this trailer. Did you mean incredible amateurish or incredibly unoriginal or both?

    • Stick Insect

it looks like a rsident evil sequel lol

  • Gmork

This is obviously the result of all the development he poured into trying to get Alien 5 off the ground. It has all similar players, just replace the xenos with lizard people, tweak the script and BANG! I want to see it just to observe where he was going to go with Alien 5 and to see weaver in a Ripleyesque role again. Kuddos to Blomkamp for not letting all that dev go to waste!

    • Stick Insect

alien script doomed this is what u get insted

  • Rick-Taylor

This is pretty much what I expected Alien 5 to be. Not a fan, but good on Neill for proceeding with his own vision and making it thinly-veiled.

  • Tim Behrend
    • Golic

If Blomkamp wants to make an Alien film WITHOUT Ripley, Hicks or Newt; I’m all about it.

      • Corey

Yeah, I have zero interest in seeing Ripley in film again. She died in Alien 3 and I pretend that Ressurection doesn’t exist. Her story is told.

        • Jarea

She can play as the grandmother of Ripley XD

  • sliceanddice

Looks interesting, i suppose – but I’m struggling to see what’s experimental about it …

  • Nahuel Benvenuto

the only good movie he did was District 9 before selling his sold to the hollywood devil, i hope this is as good

  • Halloween_Vic

This looks awesome! Seriously this looks better then Alien Covenant. He brought Sigourney on board, and was that Dakota Fanning? BUt seriously say what you want about Neil but this looks amazing. Blomkamp for a true Alien sequel please, fuck Ridley Scott.

  • marklola12 .

lol nothing experimental about it, in other words big studios wont give I’m much money anymore since most of his movies flop

    • Jarea

Maybe they dont want you to see reptilians XD.
The idea behind all his movies is great!. The problem was the argument details and storytelling. However, Chapie was OK
