10. Francis Bacon (Visual artist, painter)
Best known for his painting “Screaming Pope” which graces the cover of Sisters of Mercy’s “Body and Soul” EP. His work is a sublime mix of the kinetic movement of modern art, and the Gothic subjects of classical painting. And while I wouldn’t call him a surrealist, his work, in my opinion, has too much focus both in subject and execution. His subject matter focuses on abstracted human and biological forms, ranging from that of his fellow painter Lucian Freud to the suspended carcasses of cattle.
To me, his work describes the horrors of life and the questions and uncertainty that goes along with it.
It is cosmic horror on a personal level.
