3. Krampus
Half dysfunctional family comedy and half nightmarish creature feature, Krampus is Gremlins for a new generation. Sure, it’s not as dark ad Gremlins was, which is pretty much the only disappointing thing about the film, but it’s a fun, holiday-themed horror movie that we so rarely see nowadays. Krampus marks Michael Dougherty’s second directorial effort after 2007’s Trick ‘r Treat (and this one actually made it to theaters!), and while it may not be quite as strong as that one, it is still a noble effort that mostly succeeds at what it sets out to do, and that is be a fun horror comedy that the entire family can enjoy. People have complained that none of the family members were likable, and with the exception of David Koechner’s and Conchata Ferrell’s characters, I disagree (though them being unlikable was sort of the point). Filled with great practical effects and a wholesome family message (and a dark twist in the final moments), Krampus deserves to be a must-watch every Christmas.
