1. Pod

Here it is, my favorite horror movie of the year. Pod is a movie I knew absolutely nothing about before I watched it, but I sought it out when I learned I was going to be seeing director Mickey Keating’s newest film Darling (read my review) at Fantastic Fest. Going in completely blind is definitely the way to watch Pod, so if you haven’t seen it just stop reading now. Needless to say, it was one of the few movies to come out this year to legitimately terrify me, which is the main reason it takes my top spot this year. I found myself feeling like a child and not wanting to walk down my hallway without the lights on. This rarely happens to me, but Pod tapped in to something in my brain to make me feel like a scared little boy again. Pod tells a simple story about two siblings (Lauren Ashley Carter and Dean Cates) who go to their family cabin where their mentally unstable brother (Brian Morvant) has claimed he has locked a monster in the basement. Is there really a monster? Or is the brother just insane? Keating delivers unbearable tension throughout Pod’s brief 76 minute runtime. Though the film is brief, it doesn’t feel slight. It’s a tense and scary roller coast ride of a film with a final act that will scare the pants off of you. Watch it with the lights out for maximum effect.
