5. Abattoir

Darren Lynn Bousman’s latest offering wasn’t his best film, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at this nifty poster showcasing the film’s villain Jebediah Crone with a haunted house emerging out of his skull. It’s a unique and sublimely creepy image. The film isn’t that great, but at least the poster is cool.

4. I Am Not a Serial Killer

In case you didn’t know, there’s a monster in I Am a Serial Killer. Spoiler aside, this is a beautifully drawn poster that uses its icy Minnesota setting to its advantage by carving the shape of the film’s big bad in an icy lake.

3. Beyond the Gates

Vintage-style posters are just great, aren’t they? Nothing else would suit the poster for Beyond the Gates, a retro pastiche that centers around a killer VHS board game. The poster focuses on the three lead characters as Barbara Crampton’s icy game host Evelyn watches over them. It’s not often you see purple as the primary color in a poster, but Beyond the Gates makes it work.

2. The Witch

What better way to market your New-England folktale than to put a spotlight on the demon goat starring in the film? There were a trio of animal posters (one with a raven and another with a rabbit) for The Witch released before it went to theaters, but it is the one featuring the malicious eye of Black Phillip that inspires the most chills. It is surprising that the marketing department chose not to use “Live deliciously” as the tagline, but props to them for leaving out the iconic phrase used in the film’s final moments.

1. Boo! A Madea Halloween

Come on, you know there weren’t better posters released this year than those for Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween. No matter hour you feel about the film itself, you can’t deny that this is some clever marketing. This is some funny shit. If only that had spoofed more movies like the posters for Zombeavers did a few years ago.
