Onyx the Fortuitous

The Sundance Film Festival commences again in Park City, Utah, premiering a new slate of films from January 19–29, 2023. Among the horror set to premiere next week is horror-comedy Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, based on the writer, director, and star Andrew Bowser’s viral internet character.

Bowser will star alongside Olivia Taylor Dudley (“The Magicians”), Rivkah Reyes (School of Rock), Jeffrey Combs (Re-AnimatorThe Frighteners), Ralph Ineson (The WitchThe Green Knight), Arden Myrin (“Insatiable,” “Mad TV”), Melanie Chandra (“Code Black”), and T.C. Carson (Final Destination 2).

But there’s one more important cast member to announce.

Bloody Disgusting can exclusively reveal that horror stalwart Barbara Crampton (You’re NextRe-Animator) also stars in the upcoming horror-comedy! Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls reunites Crampton and Combs, who previously starred together in Stuart Gordon’s Re-AnimatorFrom Beyond, and Castle Freak.

Check out the behind-the-scenes image of Crampton, Combs, and Bowser and an exclusive reveal of the monster-filled poster below.

Bowser’s film is described as “a mix of 80’s influenced-horror with the colorful, gothic feel of Beetlejuice and the lovably quirky characters of Napoleon Dynamite. The titular character, Onyx, originated from a series of viral videos created by Andrew over the past decade, many of which have received millions of views on YouTube, and an Onyx TikTok with over 1 million followers.”

The official plot: “Amateur occultist Marcus J. Trillbury, aka Onyx The Fortuitous, is struggling. He’s misunderstood at home and work, but his dreams for a new life seem to be answered when he lands a coveted invitation to the mansion of his idol Bartok the Great for a ritual to raise the spirit of an ancient demon. He excitedly joins Bartok and his fellow eclectic group of devotees as they prepare for the ceremony, but pretty quickly, it becomes apparent everything is not as it seems. As Onyx and his new friends fight to keep their souls, he must decide what he’s willing to truly sacrifice in order to meet his destiny.”

Head over to Sundance for details on Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls’ premiere screenings, and stay tuned for our coverage out of the fest.

A hospital stay grows more nerve-frazzling when memory loss distorts reality in our exclusive clip from This Tempting Madness, inspired by a true story.

The mind-bending psychological thriller will be released in select theaters and on demand on June 12 via Vertical.

Simone Ashley (“Bridgerton”) stars as Mia, who awakens from a coma, grievously injured, her memory fractured. As she puts the pieces of her past together, she starts to question her own actions and her perception of reality.

In This Tempting Madness, “Mia awakens from a coma grievously injured, her memory fractured. As she puts the pieces of her past together, she starts to question her own actions, and her perception of reality.”

Jennifer E. Montgomery makes her feature directorial debut from a script she co-wrote with director of photography Andrew Davis, inspired by Montgomery’s first-hand experience with tragedy involving her best friend.

“Months before the incident, there were signals that her world was unraveling,” says Montgomery. “I could feel the pressure building, though I didn’t know what form it would take. I never could have known what violence would come, and I certainly never imagined making a film about it.”

Austin Stowell (“NCIS: Origins”), Suraj Sharma (Happy Death Day 2U), Mojean Aria (Reminiscence), Amol Shah (“For All Mankind”), and Zenobia Shroff (“Ms. Marvel”) round out the cast.

Smoke Jumper Films and Mango Monster Productions produce in association with Catchlight Studios (HereticThe Blackening).

This Tempting Madness is rated R for “language, violence/bloody images, and brief sexuality.”
