Upcoming Shark Thriller ’47 Meters Down’ Gets Bizarre Name Change to ‘In the Deep’
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film steal an abandoned title before. This has to the a first, right?
Dimension Films, Anchor Bay Entertainment and Starz Digital have just announced that they’ll be releasing In The Deep on DVD, Digital HD and On Demand August 2.
Originally titled 47 Meters Down, the new shark thriller is directed by Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of The Door), and stars Mandy Moore (“This Is Us,” A Walk To Remember), Claire Holt (“The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals”), Yani Gellman (“Pretty Little Liars,” “The Young And The Restless”), and Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, The Dark Knight Rises).
Now, here’s why the name change is shockingly bizarre: In the Deep was the original title of Columbia Pictures’ upcoming The Shallows, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Blake Lively. With that title abandoned for the latter, Dimension and Starz/Anchor Bay co-opted the title for their own shark movie that’s releasing just weeks after Columbia Pictures’. Bad blood? Who knows, but I think there are some sharks in these waters that smell it.
“In The Deep dives into a world of two sisters (Mandy Moore and Claire Holt) who become trapped at the bottom of the ocean when a diving expedition to observe sharks goes horribly wrong. When the cable attaching the observation cage to the boat breaks and the cage sinks to the bottom of the ocean, the sisters must figure out a way to get back to safety battling injuries, lack of oxygen, and, worst of all, blood thirsty, great white sharks.”

‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’ Arrives on Hulu and Disney+ Next Week
Get ready for double the fun, protagonists, and body count when Ready or Not 2: Here I Come explodes on streaming next week.
Just in time for the fireworks, the sequel makes its streaming debut on Hulu and Disney+ on July 2.
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett are back, along with Samara Weaving, for more hide and slay mayhem.
Picking up moments after the all-out attack from the Le Domas family in the first Ready or Not movie, Grace (Weaving) discovers she’s reached the next level of the nightmarish game — and this time with her estranged sister Faith (Kathryn Newton) at her side. Grace has one chance to survive, keep her sister alive, and claim the High Seat of the Council that controls the world. Four rival families are hunting her for the throne, and whoever wins rules it all.
That means a higher body count and even more explosive carnage. Just how much? A whopping 325 gallons worth, the directors previously told BD.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, Varun Saranga, and Daniel Beirne also star.
I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “More is more in Ready or Not 2. Bigger stakes, larger playing field, a higher (and more gruesome) body count, and even double the protagonists. It’s all designed to deliver maximum crowd-pleasing fun.”
The horror-comedy sequel is written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.
