‘Stasis’ Dev Shares First Look at ‘Cayne’ Prequel

Published

on

In January, The Brotherhood announced Cayne, a standalone prequel DLC chapter for their crowdfunded sci-fi horror game Stasis. We weren’t given much information to work with, aside from the promise that its self-contained narrative will “astound, disgust, and amaze” us, and tie neatly into the events in Stasis, which you absolutely should still play even though you won’t need it to play the DLC.

Also interesting is their decision to build the DLC from scratch using technology that wasn’t made available until they were too far into the development of Stasis, which took five years to realize.

It seems as if that was the correct move, as the new tech has already given them nifty graphical effects, such as a “subtle light that our protagonist emits that let’s you find her easily on the screen, and beautiful 2D shader effects to bring liquids to life and particles get caught in shafts of light,” explains a post on the studio’s development blog that I took way too long to discover.

Audiophiles may be interested in the improved sound design, where your footsteps now have “distinct sounds depending on surfaces, sound is now directional and can be played based on distances.” The completed musical score sounds just as impressive, with “three different composers providing a unique texture and soundscape.” And you won’t have to get used to an unfamiliar voice, as Ryan Cooper (the voice of John) will return.

In terms of scale, Cayne will be smaller than Stasis. That sounds about right for DLC, standalone or otherwise. That’ll free up precious resources that can then be spent on realizing its “body horror and psychological terror” themes.

The Brotherhood is designing the DLC with multi-platform support in mind, and it’s already playable on PC and Mac. It’s expected to arrive in the fall.

In related news, the team has confirmed they’re working on adding Linux and iOS to the list of platforms Stasis supports. No word on when they’ll be ready. I’ll let you know when that changes.

‘A Man in the Woods With an Axe’ – First Look at ’80s Throwback Slasher [Exclusive]

We have an exclusive first look at A Man in the Woods With an Axe, a blood-soaked, genre-twisting homage to 1980s slasher films.

Spanning four decades, A Man in the Woods With an Axe begins in the summer of 1987 before pushing into the modern era, weaving together timelines and perspectives in a way that builds both dread and intrigue.

Drawing inspiration from genre standouts like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Hatchet, and The Cabin in the Woods, the film blends visceral horror with moments of dark humor, creating a uniquely balanced experience that honors tradition while carving its own identity.

Writer-director Dillon Brown (Primal Darkness) aims to deliver everything fans crave from a slasher while boldly subverting expectations with a mid-film twist that redefines the story.

“This is an unapologetic love letter to the films that made me fall in love with horror,” Brown tells Bloody Disgusting. “But I didn’t just want to recreate that feeling; I wanted to challenge it. About halfway through, the film takes a turn that completely changes how you view not only this story, but the genre itself.”

Brown describes the vintage-inspired production as “far and away the bloodiest film I’ve ever made,” with practical effects helmed by Cody Ruch (The Mill, Pig Hill), an instructor at Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects Program.

From Horror Dadz Productions, A Man in the Woods With an Axe is currently in production and targeting an early 2027 release.
