‘Cheap Thrills’ Director E.L. Katz Begins Filming ‘Small Crimes’!

E.L. Katz, who broke out in a big way with his excellent thriller Cheap Thrills, is now in production on Small Crimes, written by Katz and Macon Blair (Green Room, Blue Ruin), and being produced by, get this, David Lancaster (Drive, Nightcrawler, Whiplash).

Two-time Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver (StokerSilver Linings Playbook, Animal Kingdom), Oscar nominee Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) along with Emmy nominees Gary Cole (pictured below in Office Space, “Veep”) and Molly Parker (“House of Cards”) have joined “Game of Thrones’” actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the crime thriller from Rumble Films, Deadline reports.

Small Crimes is a suspense black comic tale that follows a disgraced former cop, fresh off a six-year prison sentence for attempted murder, who returns home looking for redemption, but then ends up trapped in the mess he left behind. The film is based on Dave Zeltserman’s 2008 novel:

After serving time for the attempted murder of a District Attorney, disgraced former cop Joe Denton returns home looking for redemption. An embarrassment to his parents, abandoned by his ex-wife, it seems as if things can’t get much worse. But then Joe finds himself trapped in the mess he left behind, in the cross fire between a crooked sheriff, the vengeful DA, and a mafia kingpin who knows too much.

Delightfully suspenseful, blackly comic, Small Crimes follows Joe’s desperate and misguided attempts to extract himself from this nightmare, only to dig himself into a deeper — and bloodier — hole.

Katz also directed the phenomenal opening sequence to ABC’s of Death 2, and is helming an episode of MTV’s “Scream”.
