Peace Pilgrim once said “Life is like a mirror. Smile at it and it smiles back at you.” When it comes to the latest episode of World of Death, we don’t think this is quite what Ms. Pilgrim had in mind.
First, in Daniel Tripod’s MASQUERADE, we see just how brutal one woman’s jealousy and infatuation will go to appeal to her potential beau. Violent and bloody, but shot beautifully, Tripod’s film delves into the darkness within all of us and showcases the true potential of an envious coed who’s probably seen one too many Mission Impossible movies. I hope her date is a fan of Ed Gein!
Next up is MIRROR MIRROR directed by Allan Harvey. The film opens with what appears to be the end of a successful job interview, however, it is clear from the beginning that something is very off. Harvey utilizes black and white cinematography to blur the lines of reality and contrast the stark images of violence.
For only being 2 minutes long, Mirror Mirror is certainly ambitious. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the film is the undercurrent of female revenge throughout. Although the woman’s actions seem disturbing on the surface, it is clear from the opening scene that men are not the only victims in Harvey’s black and white world.
