What would have been a pretty neat secret was revealed when Warner Bros’ Pictures’ The Curse of La Llorona (review) premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last month. That’s right, it’s the next installment of The Conjuring universe (and will be followed by Annabelle Comes Home in June)! It’s puzzling then, that the studio hasn’t been using that as part of its marketing campaign for the film. It seems like a surefire way to guarantee big box office numbers, but that particular fact has been curiously left out of the film’s trailers.
Bloody Disgusting had the opportunity to interview the film’s director Michael Chaves (next year’s The Conjuring 3), as well as cast members Linda Cardellini (Scooby-Doo, A Simple Favor, Grandma’s Boy), Patricia Velásquez (The Mummy, Mindhunters) and Raymond Cruz (“Breaking Bad”, “Better Call Saul”) after the film’s premiere to ask them about that.
We only had six minutes for the interview, so we weren’t able to get too much into the dirty details of the film’s marketing strategy, but we were able to have some fun asking everyone what their favorite scary movies were! Oh, and we had to mention that Scooby-Doo Easter egg that somehow made its way into the film.

“Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.”
Linda Cardellini is the lead in the film, which also stars Patricia Velásquez. Raymond Cruz of “Breaking Bad” fame will play Catholic priest-turned-shaman alongside a cast that also includes Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, Sean Patrick Thomas and Roman Christou. Marisol Ramirez plays the titular La Llorona.
