Michael Dougherty has brought the horror world with him in his new blockbuster Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The filmmaker who brought you Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus has loaded the film with references to other films.
Fans got a taste of Dougherty’s homages in the trailer, which revealed King Ghidorah – Godzilla’s greatest nemesis – perched on a mountaintop, closely mirroring the classic shot of Pazuzu’s statue in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist.
In a recent interview with Bloody-Disgusting, Dougherty revealed that was no coincidence. In fact, he went one step further.
“Actually, Pazuzu’s in the movie,” Michael Dougherty said, confirming our suspicions.
“Okay, so in [spoiler redacted], where a certain event happens, you’ll see the silhouette of Pazuzu perched on top of a column, a stone column,” Dougherty revealed. “It’s in the trailer, by the way.”
Eagle-eyed fans may want to start scouring those trailers for Pazuzu’s proper cameo, but they should also scour the rest of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
“There’s so much,” Dougherty added. “There’s layers upon layers of sight gags and Easter eggs and references. I like to reward my audience for paying attention. So I’m waiting to see if anyone succeeds in chronicling all them.”
