The Conjuring universe just keeps getting bigger. What started as a single film about the real-life demon-hunting Warren family has grown into a sprawling, interconnected universe in which each installment introduces new demons that could – and frequently are – highlighted in their own spin-off films.
But as easy as it would be to bring all the Warner Bros. horror monsters into the Conjuring universe – like the demons from It, Lights Out and A Nightmare on Elm Street – at least one person connected with the franchise doesn’t think it’s a good idea.
In a recent interview with Gary Dauberman, the writer/director of Annabelle Comes Home (who also wrote Annabelle, Annabelle Creation and The Nun), Bloody-Disgusting asked if the possibility had ever been discussed behind the scenes.
“No, because I feel like we’d all be immediately taken out of it, because you’d know that was just created for a movie, maybe,” Dauberman said, referring to the Conjuring franchise’s selling point of having been based on (allegedly) true stories.
“You know what I mean? Whereas we like to ground this and have some sense of authenticity, that some of this stuff has really happened, or similar things have happened, inspired by the true events. I think as soon as you get the ‘oh, that was a movie’ you know you’re watching a movie and suddenly it becomes a little less scary for me,” Dauberman explained.
Of course, the Conjuring movies aren’t, strictly speaking, 100% accurate, but it seems as though the odds of the Warrens waging a supernatural war against Freddy Krueger are pretty slim.
At least you’ll get to see a whole bunch of new demons in Gary Dauberman’s Annabelle Comes Home, in theaters June 26!
