Movie titles don’t get much more specific than 47 Meters Down, a film which was all about scuba divers who get trapped in a shark cage, fighting off man-eating sharks… 47 meters down.
The problem with a title like that, of course, is that sequels get a little complicated. What are the odds that other people would get trapped underwater, again, and fight off sharks, again, and wind up exactly 47 meters down?
Well, it turns out the odds are pretty darned good. When Bloody-Disgusting interviewed director Johannes Roberts about the sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, he revealed that there is indeed one scene in the film where the protagonists hit that very specific depth… with one to grow on, because the film’s original title was 48 Meters Down.

“In the script, in the initial script where they go down the vortex where the current takes them down and they’re on the ledge there,” Johannes Roberts explained, “they’re actually 48 meters down.”
Roberts is referring to a scene towards the end of the film in which two of the surviving divers get sucked down into a whirlpool, just as they’re about to escape. That’s the one scene where they’re 47… er, “48” meters down!
Not that you’d know it from watching the film, of course. That very specific piece of information didn’t end up in the final cut, Roberts explained, and it might not even technically be accurate.
“It’s in the script. We just decided not do that in the actual movie, so you could look at it that that is [specifically that] deep,” Roberts said. “I’m not 100% sure actually, to be honest, but we played around with that idea.”
“But in the end [we] felt that this was not a movie about depth, other than the title being the franchise,” Roberts says, referring to the new film’s storyline about being trapped in underwater caves. “There were different constraints on you and different fears, so it wasn’t really one about how deep you’re going.”
