Just a few days ago, we reported a story about Sigourney Weaver and her thoughts on the likelihood of Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 happening. Her optimism fueled interest into the film, which was considered essentially dead in the water as Ridley Scott pursued the Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant and the films that would follow, which would connect them to the Alien series. Now more news has come from Weaver and it’s sounding very, very exciting!
Weaver was at the Town Hall cinema in New York City where she attended a screening of Aliens and then performed a Q&A afterwards. A representative of AVPGalaxy.net was in attendance and brought back some very interesting bits.
The site writes out the paraphrased pieces of information:
[Sigourney Weaver] speaks of the script as if – as far as she is concerned – it’s happening already, and in her mind is the “most satisfying” ending of the story. When first asked about working with Michael Biehn, and their flirtation/romantic relationship in Aliens, she added “you will see a lot more of that in the next one.She continued to say she just wrapped something else with Blomkamp which she can’t talk about, in South Africa. She stated how expansive the Alien 5 story is, and mentioned that, like the other films, Blomkamp’s film has a very particular new vision.
Furthermore, according to Weaver, Blomkamp’s film will not replace Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection but will instead “…run parallel…” to them. So, while we are calling Blomkamp’s film Alien 5, it may in all actually really be Alien 3, although we’ll have to come up with a clever subtitle to keep things clear.
Now, it’s clear that Weaver is all about reprising her role as Ellen Ripley and it’s impossible to imagine Michael Biehn not wanting to hop in on the action. But what about Lance Henriksen? Well, an interesting tidbit came from Weaver about just that possibility…
An audience member asked about the fate of Jonesy, the beloved cat from the first and second films. The site explains, “Her response, to paraphrase was: That she imagines that Ripley found her a good home with a friend on Gateway station (musing) but she added “when all that is over they, I imagine the three of them, or maybe the four of them now, will go back and pick up Jonesy.”
Now, there was Blomkamp’s essential confirmation about the return of Newt, so perhaps Weaver is talking about her. But considering how much of this movie is shrouded in secrecy, I’d say it’s fair to assume anything could happen.
