I honestly can’t think of a sequel I’d be more interested in seeing than Beetlejuice 2. Yes, I’ve made it clear on a number of occasions that I’m not the biggest fan of director Tim Burton’s work after the 90’s, aside from Big Fish. But the thought of Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton reprising their charming roles as Lydia Deetz and Beetlejuice, respectively, just seems like a delightful journey that I’d happily undertake.
The rumor mill has been swirling for a while about when Burton might make the sequel his next project. But, so far, nothing concrete has emerged. And in a recent interview with Collider, it seems that not much has changed.
This is the thing, it’s something that I’m interested in, but there’s so many stories [online], dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I’ve talked to these people and they didn’t wanna hear this so they just made up a story. But the fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I’ve talked to a few people. It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right. It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it’s not the Beetlejuice trilogy. So it’s something that if the elements are right—because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet.
So there we have it. It’s something Burton would like to return to if the opportunity presents itself but it’s not anywhere near being confirmed. Looks like we’ll just have to wait this one out until something certain comes down the pipeline.
