What impresses me the most from the films in World of Death is the production value that some of the movies possess. Understandably, the shorts with larger budgets behind them and professional crews at the helm should see quality shine through in the finished product. But it’s the filmmakers that may not have resources like a Steadicam or a grip truck to aid in the realization of their vision who truly impress. There is no substitute for ingenuity and World of Death certainly has some great examples of this.
Brandon Hunt decided to bite off quite a bit of ambition with his short film “Wolf Teeth”. It’s rare to see practical fx work such as full body creature suits in a short. This movie’s got one. Brandon also branched out with an interesting visual perspective by shooting the whole short from first person point-of-view.
In our second short, Australian filmmaker Hussein Khoder tackles the slasher genre with his short film “Six Bloodstained Shadows”. The title alone screams Italian horror, but the lighting and violence help seal the deal with this fun giallo homage.
