Let’s Look at the Other Masks in the ‘Friday the 13th’ Films

Published

on

The Friday the 13th franchise is one that’s all about the mask. In Part 2, Jason wears a sack over his head, and in Part 3 he acquires his trademark hockey mask… rarely taking it off again.

But what about the other masks seen in the films?

In Friday the 13th Part 2, Paul Holt gathers the counselors around a campfire and tells them the story of Jason Voorhees, which of course soon becomes a story they end up literally inside of. The only one not sitting around the fire is prankster Ted, who pops up at the end of the story to scare his fellow counselors. With a spear in his hand and a loincloth wrapped around his waist, the eternal idiot is wearing a scary Halloween mask (above), which Jason himself picks up and tosses aside later in the film – as for the spear, it ends up being used to murder two counselors at once.

That mask is known as “Fantome,” and was released by Chicago’s Be Something Studios (eventually renamed Zagone Studios) in the early ’80s. The mask, which had been discontinued for many years, was recently brought back to life by Trick or Treat Studios, who partnered with Zagone to resurrect some of the company’s original masks. While Jason may not have wanted it, the mask makes for an awesome and unique addition to the collection of any Friday the 13th fan.

Friday the 13th Part 3‘s Shelly Finkelstein may not have been the most popular guy in school, but the overweight oddball with the curly hair undeniably plays an important role in Friday the 13th mythology. It’s of course Shelly who brings the iconic hockey mask to Crystal Lake, so without Shelly, there’s a good chance Jason would still be roaming around with that sack on his head. But the first time we meet Shelly, he’s wearing a much different mask than the one Jason eventually steals from him. Goofy pranksters sure do love masks in the Friday the 13th universe, huh?

In Shelly’s introductory scene, he scares his friends with a fake knife and a plastic mask that has a creepy smile painted on it, which the production team likely picked up from a local novelty store. Today you can find the same mask, or at least very similar ones, in seasonal costume shops.

Imagine Jason stole this one instead?!

Jason Voorhees’ most beloved nemesis is unquestionably Tommy Jarvis, who battled the masked maniac across three films. He was first seen as a young boy in fourth installment Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, where he was played by Corey Feldman. We first meet Tommy while he’s playing the video game Zaxxon, and he’s wearing some kind of alien creature mask over his head.

Though Tommy says he made it, the mask was actually designed by Alec Gillis, who was just starting his career at the time. Gillis, a makeup effects artist on the film, has gone on to become one of the top names in the field, co-founding Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. Gillis has worked on countless films including Aliens, The Monster Squad, Tremors, and the new adaptation of IT.

The very same alien mask is also worn by Jarvis in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. The mask to date has never been mass produced, but various fans have made replicas.

It’s no secret that Tommy, a pretty talented mask-maker, was based on Tom Savini. Check out his collection of creations below, featured in both The Final Chapter and A New Beginning!
