Sigourney Weaver is Totally MUTHUR in ‘Alien: Covenant’, Right?

Twentieth Century Fox just released yet another Alien: Covenant short film, this one entitled “She Won’t Go Quietly.” Also directed by Luke Scott, the footage follows Daniels (Katherine Waterston) as she teams up with MUTHUR, the Covenant’s onboard AI (also the AI in the original Alien), to take out a hostile alien threat. Much like the last clip, it appears to be prequel footage that eventually shows a potentially huge moment in Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus sequel, in theaters May 19th.

But that’s not what has our eyebrows raised. As we noticed way back in April, it sounded as if the Covenant’s computer voice was none other than Sigourney Weaver. Squires and I listened to it 100 times over and are convinced Ripley is somehow connected to this Alien prequel. The evidence is mounting in the aforementioned short film, which is all about the ship’s AI, dubbed MUTHUR. While the IMBd lists Lorelei King as MUTHUR, all I can hear is Weaver’s voice. Is this a coup? Let’s examine. Why is the AI named MUTHUR? Think about it… very early spoilers from production indicated that Waterston’s Daniels is actually the MOTHER to Ellen Ripley. Scott skated around this notion in recent interviews, but never flat out denied it. Also, Squires did the math and figured that it’s quite possible that Daniels is, in fact, the mother to a young Ripley, which become a potent theory when Scott exclaimed that it’s possible he could “de-age” Weaver in a future Alien sequel. While we could be (and probably are) overthinking this, I think the Jonesy is out of the bag on this one. What say you?

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
