‘Devil’s Gate’ Trailer Mixes Crazy Practical Effects with Horrid CGI
“Heroes” star Milo Ventimiglia (The Divide) and Amanda Schull of SyFy’s “12 Monkeys” will be seen in the sci-fi creature feature Devil’s Gate, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and will soon screen at the forthcoming FrightFest in London. The first trailer was released ahead of the screening and boasts a number of cool practical creature effects, mostly performed by the great Javier Botet (It, Mama, [REC], The Conjuring 2, Alien: Covenant). On the other hand, the footage is hindered by absolutely horrific CGI from lighting strikes to blood.
The indie marks the directorial debut of commercial director and Dawn of the Dead‘s second unit director Clay Staub, who also wrote the story and screenplay for the film along with Peter Aperlo.
The film is set in a small town where an FBI Agent, played by Schull, comes to investigate the missing wife and son of a local rancher, played by Ventimiglia.
Devil’s Gate also stars X-Men actor Shawn Ashmore as the local deputy forced to collaborate with the outside investigator in his town, and “Jane the Virgin’s” Bridget Regan as the missing wife that sets the mystery into action. Jonathan Frakes will play a sheriff who is uncomfortable with the interference of the FBI in his town.
IFC Midnight recently acquired the film for release here in the States later this year.

‘Backrooms’ Heads Home to Digital Next Week
Are you ready to go back?
After a record-breaking box office run and an extended cut re-release, A24 and director Kane Parsons’ Backrooms is heading home to Digital.
Backrooms will be available to rent or buy this Tuesday, July 14.
In the film, Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in Backrooms as the owner of Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire, who discovers a strange doorway in the basement of the furniture showroom. He sets out to explore the mysterious, liminal space, walking headfirst into a creepypasta nightmare.
Renate Reinsve (A Different Man) also stars in Backrooms.
Will Soodik wrote the screenplay.
I wrote in my review, “Backrooms is at once complex and sparse, but never repetitive. It might be set in 1990, but it effectively captures modern anxieties and isolation in a way that frequently makes your skin crawl. While the journey ultimately loses steam by its cryptic end, Parsons’ visual representation of the human psyche disturbs like no other.”
YouTube prodigy Kane Parsons makes his feature directorial debut based on his creepypasta-inspired video series, which debuted in 2022 and has amassed over 190 million views to date.
