‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ Heads to Streaming Next Month
If you missed one of 2023’s more underrated horror movies, we’ve got great news: Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter is heading to streaming next month.
Look for The Last Voyage of the Demeter to arrive on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME on February 11, 2024.
Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), this latest Dracula movie leaves the comedy of Renfield behind for a classic, Hammer-style horror movie at sea. The film is an adaptation of a single passage from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, known as “The Captain’s Log,” which has never been adapted like this before.
The film is “based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula. The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film will detail the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence onboard the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbour, it was a derelict. There was no trace of the crew.”
Corey Hawkins (Kong: Skull Island, “The Walking Dead”) stars in The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The latest version of the script was written by Zak Olkewicz (Bullet Train).
The cast also includes Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, and Nikolai Nikolaeff, with Javier Botet as Dracula.
I wrote in my review that Øvredal’s latest offers “rich world-building, impressive scale, a commitment to practical effects, and fully realized characters ground the increasingly claustrophobic, grim tale set at sea. Director Andre Øvredal ramps up the horror with regularity, once again demonstrating a talent for scare crafting, tension building, and breathless staging that transforms a familiar tale into an exhilarating horror adventure unafraid to go for the jugular.”
The film also offers stunning production design from production designer Edward Thomas, who’s also responsible for the thrilling set pieces in Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Monster Hunter.

Sony returns to their own Marvel universe with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, which has been bumped all over the release schedule. This week, it’s been bumped once more.
There was a time when Sony was going to unleash Kraven in theaters in October 2023, but the film was then bumped to August 2024. It’ll now release on December 13, 2024.
Kraven the Hunter will be the very first Marvel movie from Sony to be released into theaters with an “R” rating, with lots of bloody violence being promised.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the title character, Marvel’s ultimate predator.
“Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.”
Ariana DeBose will play Calypso in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie.
Christopher Abbott (Possessor) is playing The Foreigner, with Levi Miller (Better Watch Out) also on board. Alessandro Nivola (The Many Saints of Newark) will play another villain, but character details are under wraps. Russell Crowe and Fred Hechinger also star.
J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) is directing Kraven the Hunter.
The screenplay was written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk.
