I’m not a stickler when it comes to a film’s MPAA rating, meaning I typically don’t really care what rating a film receives. Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule, and occasionally there are some that make me raise an eyebrow.
Happy Death Day stars La La Land‘s Jessica Rothe as “a college student who relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity.”
The movie is a slasher with the premise of Rothe being brutally murdered over and over again. Yet, it’s received a PG-13 from the MPAA for “violence/terror, crude sexual content, language, some drug material, and partial nudity.”
Obviously, I have yet to see Happy Death Day, and it’s quite possible the MPAA let them get away with a lot, but right now all I see are red flags. (It’s worth noting that Final Girls was rated PG-13 and was pretty great.) I guess we’ll reserve judgment for when it’s released on October 13, 2017. The trailer (below) was pretty cool.
The film is directed by Christopher Landon, who helmed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Paramount’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Charles Aitken, and Rachel Matthew also star.
