[Box Office] ‘IT’ Continues to Float, ‘Flatliners’ Dies, and ‘Happy Death Day’ is Tracking Well
With all of the horror happenings in the box office, it’s hard not to report on it, especially when New Line Cinema’s IT continues to soar. While it’s not even close to being the all-time highest grossing horror movie, it’s still a behemoth that’s crushing everything in Pennywise’s path. It was #1, again. Estimates from this weekend have the film dropping only 41% and notching $17.3M more for $291M domestically. As for international, add a whopping $35M for $262M overseas. The total? $553M worldwide.
As for Flatliners? I had heard that Sony was panicking internally and that they had been editing the film right up until the deadline, and even considered pulling the remake for a direct VOD release at a later date. It’s currently sitting at %0 on Rotten Tomatoes with 36 reviews in their system. It’s shit, and as @ERCboxoffice notes, this is just another in a long line of failed remakes over at Sony (i.e. Total Recall, RoboCop, Ghostbusters). Digressing, Flatliners died a horrible death at the box office, making $6.7M here in the States and only $3.1M internationally. That’s a disturbing $9.8M worldwide on a $20M budget, which does not include marketing expenses. That may be one of the worst flops in recent years.
Looking ahead, Universal Pictures’ Happy Death Day, starring La La Land‘s Jessica Rothe, doesn’t release until October 13, yet we’re hearing strong early tracking. This PG-13 slasher could make a killing in two weeks leading into Halloween when Lionsgate takes a stab at bringing Jigsaw back to theaters. Rothe stars as a college student who relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer’s identity.
