Would the great horror revival continue into 2018? That was the biggest question as we exited one of the most significant years ever for horror. January has always been good to our genre, but I wasn’t sure that a fourth Insidious film could make the kind of waves as hits like last fall’s Happy Death Day or Jigsaw. While it didn’t take the top spot at the box office, Insidious: The Last Key was a monstrous success, pushing past Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the #2 spot this past weekend. The positioning means nothing with horror – it’s all about the numbers, and the fourth Insidious proves that we’ll most definitely be seeing a fifth.
The Last Key took in a whopping estimated $29,265,000 this weekend on just a $10M budget. In addition, international numbers estimate another $20M for a worldwide total of $49M! The Last Key is looking at a potential $60M+ domestic run, which would not only make it profitable, but also a huge success story. $100M worldwide isn’t out of the question either.
Speaking of horror’s takeover, take a look at this absolutely shocking stat: Insidious: The Last Key‘s opening weekend was more than Insidious: Chapter 3 back in 2015! The latter pulled in $115M worldwide in its full theatrical run, which makes the new sequel a bonafide hit and the first big horror film of 2018. Damn. In fact, these numbers are so crazy that it’s surprising Focus Features, who had it tracking around $20M and up to $25M over the weekend. This far exceeds their expectations.
