Even sixteen years later, the Insidious franchise continues to be one of the most consistently entertaining series of scary movies out there. While the saga has seen copious amounts of prequels and sequels over the years (some of which were better received than others), each of these movies found a unique way to introduce new scares while still respecting the existing mythology.
That’s why it’s so exciting that Jacob Chase’s Insidious: Out of the Further is shaping up to be a celebration of the franchise’s extensive history, with the film reuniting fan-favorite ghosts and demons for a terrifying crossover event. And while it may initially seem like this kind of film expects viewers to have intimate knowledge of the series’ mythology going in, Sony Pictures Entertainment has got the more forgetful fans covered with a nifty little recap presented by series veteran Lin Shaye.
In the video, Shaye (who has been playing the fan-favorite medium Elise Rainer since 2010) gives us a brief overview of each film and how they fit into the overarching timeline.
This brief promo may technically contain everything you need to know in order to follow the nostalgic frights of Chase’s upcoming sequel, but it doesn’t quite replace the visceral thrills of actually experiencing (or re-experiencing) these movies the way they that were originally meant to be seen.
That’s why I’d also recommend rewatching the franchise -which is currently spread out across Peacock and HBO Max- before Insidious: Out of the Further hits theaters on August 21.
