Mike Flanagan Directing Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’ Sequel ‘Doctor Sleep’!

Late last year, Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush, Gerald’s Game) was asked which Stephen King novel he’d love to adapt the most, a question of course inspired by the fact that Flanagan was fresh off directing an absolutely stellar adaptation of King’s Gerald’s Game. Flanagan’s answer? Doctor Sleep, King’s 2013 sequel to The Shining.

Deadline reports today that Flanagan’s fantasy film is becoming reality!

The site notes that Warner Bros. has put an adaptation of Doctor Sleep on the fast track, with Flanagan set to direct. He will also rewrite a script penned by Akiva Goldsman.

Doctor Sleep takes place years after the events at the Overlook Hotel and focuses on the the now middle-aged Danny who is still traumatized. He’s followed in his father’s footsteps and has problems with anger management and alcoholism. He soon gives up drinking and settles in a small town in New Hampshire. While there, his psychic abilities start to resurface and he develops a psychic link with a 12-year-old girl named Abra Stone who he must save after he discovers her life is being threatened by a tribe of paranormals led by a man named Rose the Hat.”

Trevor Macy will produce along with Vertigo’s Jon Berg. Goldsman is exec producer.
