Last week New Line Cinema announced a release date for the next film in the Conjuring universe, and while most sites assumed it was either Conjuring 3 or The Crooked Man, we told you that it could be something else entirely.

In fact, it’s been revealed that the next addition to the Conjuring universe will be the third Annabelle, with THR reporting that writer Gary Dauberman will make his directorial debut on it.

Dauberman is the writer behind the first Conjuring spinoff, Annabelle, and its prequel Annabelle: Creation. He also worked on It, New Line’s surprise smash hit adapting the Stephen King novel, and is working on the follow-up, It: Chapter 2. Among other projects, he is also writing and producing a big-screen take of the horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark for Paramount.

He will also be penning this project, which will once again be produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and the Peter Safran Company, the banners that produce what has become a billion-dollar horror franchise and among the most profitable movies ever made.

Details are kept secret but the story will once again focus on the porcelain doll that is possessed by a demonic force.

John R. Leonetti directed the first movie, initially a spin-off from Conjuring, while David F. Sandberg, who is now helming Shazam!, directed the prequel, Annabelle: Creation. After the prequel was a hit, it was apparent that New Line had another franchise on its hands.

The new Annabelle installment is on the fast track for New Line, which has set the film’s release for July 3, 2019.

To recap, the Universe so far contains:

  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • The Conjuring 2 (2016)
  • Annabelle (2014)
  • Annabelle: Creation (2017)
  • The Nun (2018)

Co-founded Bloody Disgusting in 2001. Producer on Southbound, the V/H/S trilogy, SiREN, Under the Bed, and A Horrible Way to Die. Chicago-based. Horror, pizza and basketball connoisseur. Taco Bell daily.
