For years, Todd McFarlane hyped up a new Spawn feature film that many believed would never happen, but we now know that Blumhouse and McFarlane are indeed making that film, with Jamie Foxx on board as the title character and McFarlane directing. Everything he said was going to happen actually is happening, so maybe it’s time we start listening to him.
On that note, McFarlane, who created Spawn and co-created Venom, is hoping to someday unite the two characters on the big screen for a mash-up film. And with individual movies on the way for both characters, he’s thinking the road is currently being paved for such a pair-up.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, McFarlane dreams big.
“Here’s a big “What If.” What if Sony distributes Spawn? Then is it possible that in the future Sony could have a crossover with Venom and Spawn? It’s possible,” McFarlane told the site this week. “So, I will be presenting that possibility to the Sony executives when we get ready.”
He continued, “My conversation with them would be, why wouldn’t you? Here’s what I know. Let’s say Venom is huge — I hope it is — then no matter who distributes Spawn, the first thing you will see in every trailer will be, “From the co-creator of Venom.” So, then my question to Sony is, why would you let one of your competitors use that line, given that it was your effort that made Venom work? Your money that made Venom work? Your marketing that made Venom work? I think it’s worth asking, then, what happens if they both work? And then what happens ten years down the line, when they want to do a Spawn/Venom crossover and they get the guy who helped create both those characters to direct it? Might be kind of cool.”
This may sound like something that’d never actually happen, but again I remind you that we’ve been here before with Todd McFarlane. And now that he mentions it, perhaps a whole new MCU – the McFarlane Cinematic Universe – isn’t such a bad idea…
