Even though it’s a sequel to John Carpenter’s Halloween, this year’s David Gordon Green-directed new installment in the franchise is simply titled Halloween, making it the *third* film in the franchise to bear that title. Yes, the original film and its sequel are both titled Halloween, while Rob Zombie’s remake used the simple Halloween title as well.
Why not change things up a bit, to make it clear this is a sequel rather than another remake? Speaking with EW, Gordon Green reveals that he almost did, while noting why he did not.
“That was a weird discussion,” the director told the site. “You know, do we call it The Shape? Do we call it Halloween Returns? What do you call it? Technically, it’s the third Halloween II. It kind of got to the point where we were like, ‘Well, we don’t want to not invite anybody. We don’t want someone who is unfamiliar with the previous films to think, well, I need to catch up.’”
He continued, “So then we just thought, for simplicity, let’s just call it Halloween.”
Michael Myers returns home on October 19. And Laurie Strode is ready for him.
