In no thanks to James Wan and his Atomic Monster, New Line Cinema has taken back the reigns as horror king. “The House that Freddy Built” is dominating the box office with their Conjuring Universe and now plans to take over the post-Labor Day space with new horror movies all the way through 2022.
Already, New Line has It: Chapter Two from director Andy Muschietti opening on September 6, 2019, but now they will open an untitled Conjuring universe movie on Sept. 11, 2020, followed by untitled horror movies on Sept. 10, 2021, and Sept. 9, 2022, reports Deadline. We can only hope one of the films is the rebirth of Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare On Elm Street.
Yesterday, it was announced that The Curse of La Llorona (in theaters April 19, 2019) director Michael Chaves was taking over the directing reins for James Wan on The Conjuring 3. The site notes that it’s not certain yet whether Conjuring 3 will go on Sept. 11, 2020, or another spinoff in the series.
The Conjuring 3 will continue the Conjurverse, which continues to explode at the box office. A few weekends back, The Nun opened with $133M worldwide. A sequel is inevitable. Also in development are a second sequel to Annabelle, to be directed by Gary Dauberman (and in theaters by July 3, 2019), and The Crooked Man, the nightmarish character spawned from Wan’s Conjuring 2.
