Rather than outright remaking/rebooting classic movies, studios have figured out that the “soft reboot” is much less offensive to fans, and this year’s Halloween definitely falls into that category. Essentially, it’s a reboot for the franchise that doesn’t create a brand new continuity, and co-writer Danny McBride was one of the main architects of that particular vision.
So then, what other horror franchises does McBride think are primed and ready for the “soft reboot” treatment? In an AMA session over on Reddit this week, he suggested Phantasm.
Responding to the same question, Halloween director David Gordon Green chimed in with both Chopping Mall and Sleepaway Camp.
In the wake of 2016’s Phantasm: Ravager, a satisfying conclusion to the franchise, I’d personally love to see the series brought back to the big screen in some way, shape or form, and Sleepaway Camp is another damn good option for a “soft reboot.” After all, once Halloween breaks records this weekend, the slasher sub-genre will be primed and ready for a comeback.
