Earlier this year, Lars von Trier‘s next film, The House That Jack Built, was the talk of the town when reports surfaced that more than half the audience walked out of the first ever screening at Cannes. It instantly became one of the most controversial films of the year when it was called “vomitive,” “torturous”, and even “vile.” Even before Suspiria had even an ounce of hype, The House That Jack Built was being dubbed as this year’s most divisive film.
Now, thanks to IFC, we’ll get a single opportunity to see the DIRECTOR’S CUT of von Trier’s movie in theaters on November 28. The event takes place one night only (full list here) before it arrives on VOD December 14th (the R-rated cut will also hit theaters day and date).
In the film, Matt Dillon stars as a serial killer who views each of his murders as a work of art. Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Bruno Ganz (Downfall), and Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road) also star with South Korean actor, Yu Ji-tae, best known to us genre fans as the antagonist in Park Chan-wook’s 2003 hardboiled thriller Oldboy.
Rafael reviewed the film out of Sitges and explained that, “The nihilism of Lars von Trier’s darkly comedic The House That Jack Built rivals American Psycho.”
