One of the big roles in Cathy Yan’s upcoming Birds of Prey that hadn’t yet been cast was DC character Cassandra Cain, and Variety reports that young actress Ella Jay Basco (“Veep,” “Teachers”) is currently in negotiations. The young actress is a newcomer on the scene, having thus far only appeared in single episodes of several TV shows.
In DC Comics, Cain is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva, and is deprived of speech and human contact during her childhood as conditioning to become the world’s greatest assassin. She eventually befriends Bruce Wayne and goes on to become Batgirl.
Margot Robbie will be leading the cast of WB/DC’s “girl gang” movie as Harley Quinn, and we recently learned that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be starring alongside Robbie. Winstead will play Huntress, with Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Rosie Perez is playing Renee Montoya.
The film’s villain will be Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor.
Christina Hodson is working on the script. Robbie is also producing.
Birds of Prey has been dated for February 7, 2020.
