The horror box office has quieted down after a booming October, but there are still a few genre films trickling into theaters. This past weekend, Sony Screen Gems’ The Possession of Hannah Grace (read our review) opened wide and failed to land even in the top three. In fact, the Diederik Van Rooijen-directed pic starring Shay Mitchell debuted at #7 with an abysmal estimated $6.5M domestic gross, although it was lucky to also nab $4.1M internationally. The $10.6M bests the reported $9.5M budget, but it’s still got a long way to go in order to break even. Screen Gems’ Slender Man, which also cost approximately $10M, mustered up $21M overseas. Hannah Grace needs something similar to happen in order for the filmmakers to celebrate.
As for Orion’s zombie musical Anna and the Apocalypse (read our review), the film opened in limited theaters (5) and conjured up a $10k per-screen average for a whopping $50k weekend. It expands this Friday, let’s see if it can continue the momentum into the first weekend in December.
