Deleted Scene from ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ Made the ‘Conjuring’ Connection a Bit Stronger

It may not be based on the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren but The Curse of La Llorona is no doubt part of the extended Conjuring Universe, with Tony Amendola reprising the role of Father Perez, a character he played in Annabelle. The doll itself even makes a cameo appearance in the new movie as part of a flashback story being told by Father Perez.

And yet, oddly enough, La Llorona was never actually marketed as being part of the Conjuring Universe, with that connection being kept secret as something of a surprise for viewers. We can’t help but think that the movie would’ve made more money at the box office if it had just been promoted as a Conjuring spinoff, but with a $26.5 million box office take this past weekend, we suppose it hardly even needed the help.

In any event, our own Rafael Motamayor has brought attention to a deleted scene from La Llorona over on GameSpot, one that would’ve brought another direct Conjuring reference into the film. Director Michael Chaves told Rafael that this particular deleted scene will likely end up on the film’s home video release, and it was to be included in the film towards the very end: La Llorona is vanquished, and all that remains is her necklace.

There was a lot of discussion about it,” Chaves told GameSpot. “There is actually a scene that was going to be at the end of the movie where at the very end of the film we shot Linda’s character [Anna], who hands over the necklace to Raymond [who plays Rafael the curandero], you know, for safekeeping. And Raymond says that he knows someone who can keep it safe and that they’re on the East Coast and they handle this sort of thing.”

Of course, he’s referring to Ed and Lorraine Warren, who keep haunted relics locked up safely in their home – that is, until the events of this year’s Annabelle Comes Home, when all the entities will be unleashed.

Chaves added, “The scene was really cool and I think everybody really liked it. But we felt like it was too heavy-handed, like just trying to lay in all these connections to [The Conjuring].”

Perhaps we haven’t seen the last of the Weeping Woman…

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
