New Images from ‘BrightBurn’ Show Off the Creepy Mask James Gunn Helped Design

EW continues to roll out their summer previews with a brand new shot from the James Gunn-produced anti superhero horror movie BrightBurn, which was recently given an “R” rating for “horror violence/bloody images, and language“.

Elizabeth Banks stars in the super-villain origin story that takes the core concept of Superman and flips it. In the film, a young boy (Jackson A. Dunn) not of this world is taken in by human parents who believe him to be special. But not all who wear capes are heroes. He dons the particularly creepy mask shown in the trailers and brand new photos today.

“I just gave so many notes on that mask,” Gunn explains to the mag, “trying to create a really truly iconic horror movie character in the same way that Freddy Krueger is, or in the same way that Leatherface is, or in the same way that Jason is.”

“Trying to create something with that same sort of feel that is instantly scary [and] plays with the superhero-ness of it all but at the same time is most definitely rooted in horror.”

“In the process of getting to the final result — that we’re all incredibly proud of — she was like a factory,” says director David Yarovesky of the film’s costume designer, Autumn Steed. “She would just make so many different iterations of the mask. At a certain point, I came into her office, and her wall was wallpapered with iterations of the mask, just the evolution of it is crazy. I just think she did an incredible job. I’d buy it because she’s my wife, but I do think she did an incredible job.”

BrightBurn arrives in theaters on May 24, 2019.
