Director Nia DaCosta‘s upcoming Candyman, written by Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, has been described as a “spiritual sequel” to the original classic, but what does that actually mean? Does it mean Tony Todd will be appearing as the Candyman, or is the film a sequel only in spirit? We don’t yet know at this time, but our curiosity continues to grow.
In a new chat with Deadline, Monkeypaw’s Ian Cooper teases what we can expect next year.
“I think what we’re trying to do with Candyman is both be mischievous in how we address the relationship to the first film but also be very satisfying,” Cooper told the site.
He continued, “What we’re doing with Candyman and how Jordan is crafting it on the page is going to be very exciting and rewarding to audiences that haven’t seen the original film as well as people who’ve seen the original film. In a broad sense of the word, this film will stand alone if you’ve never heard of a film called Candyman and will dovetail in a pretty complicated and interesting way to the original. In short, I think this will really fit in with what we’re doing with Us and did with Get Out in a way that will be circuitous.”
If Beale Street Could Talk actress Teyonah Parris will reportedly play the girlfriend of an art dealer obsessed with the legend of Candyman in the film. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also star.
The new movie returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
MGM will bring Candyman back to life on June 12, 2020.
