‘Ready or Not’ Seeks Out $10M Box Office Opening

Published

Fox Searchlight hid Ready or Not but filmgoers still managed to find it.

Directed by Radio Silence, the horror-comedy starring Samara Weaving had a severe awareness issue heading into its first weekend, not to mention opening after the majority of children have returned school. Still, the critically acclaimed R-rated “Disney” film managed to find an audience with a $10.57M opening, slightly higher than early projections.

Budgeted at a reported $6M, the film only needs $20-25M to recoup its small investment. This is likely, especially if Fox handles its own international distribution. We’ll be tracking this one over the next few weeks, but are crossing our fingers that it gains an even stronger word-of-mouth audience.

Ready or Not, which is from V/H/S and Southbound filmmakers Radio Silence, follows a young bride (Weaving) as she joins her new husband’s (Mark O’Brien) rich, eccentric family (Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell) in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their survival.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged, which had similar problems as Ready or Not, managed another $4M this weekend for a domestic take of $15.4M. International numbers have started to trickle in, but they’re insignificant as of this writing.

With double the budget as the first, the $12.5M isn’t going to be easy to recoup, unless the sequel finds a way to swim into the $35-$40M domestic range. It won’t.

While Bloody Disgusting’s William Bibbiani wasn’t a huge fan of 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, I found it to be a thrilling underwater nightmare with more than a handful of jump-out-of-your-seat scares. In fact, it felt just like a slasher movie (Director Johannes Roberts said it’s “almost like a John Carpenter movie,” adding that  the film boasted “Michael Myers sharks.“)

“The film tells the story of four teens diving in a ruined underwater city, who quickly find themselves in a watery hell as their adventure turns to horror when they learn they are not alone in the submerged caves. As they swim deeper into the claustrophobic labyrinth of caves they enter the territory of the deadliest shark species in the ocean.”

Thankfully, there’s some really good news hiding within all the box office drama.

CBS Films and Lionsgate’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (review) had an impressive opening, but needed some help to get out of their reported $25M production debt. Thankfully, the adaptation of the popular kid’s book series has already hit $50M domestically and could crawl its way to $60M. In addition, it’s quietly added $21M internationally for a global take of $72M!

The good news here is that the André Øvredal-directed gateway children’s horror movie has made it into the profit zone and opened the door for a sequel! The question is, can the budget be brought down on the next one ($25M is too much for a sequel) and will it happen given that CBS Films no longer exists? We’ll just have to wait and see, but it would be great to see this franchised.

In Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, “It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying tome.”

“Mythic Quest” actor Chase Yi has been cast in a lead role in Paramount and Blumhouse’s new Paranormal Activity movie, Deadline reports this afternoon.

Ian Tuason (Undertone) will direct the eighth installment in the Paranormal Activity film franchise, set to release in theaters May 21, 2027.

As for character details or plot, well, those remain scarce at this stage.

While we wait for further news on whether the demonic Toby will reappear, Tuason previously revealed to Bloody Disgusting that technology will play a huge role in his vision: “Technology — camera technology — has advanced to a point where it’s become a big part of the film and what I want to do there.”

It’s fitting, especially as it was the original Paranormal Activity that inspired the filmmaker’s haunting debut, undertone.

Paranormal Activity, created by Oren Peli, first hit theaters in 2007. Its groundbreaking minimalist approach to found-footage ghost stories has spawned a seven-film franchise that’s grossed nearly $900 million worldwide.

Franchise originator Oren Peli will produce for Solana Films, with James Wan and Jason Blum producing for Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Michael Clear and Judson Scott will exec produce for Blumhouse Atomic, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing the project for the company. Other exec producers include Steven Schneider for Room 101, Inc., Dan Slater and Cody Calahan.

Also on the way soon is the Paranormal Activity stage play.
