‘It’ Director Andy Muschietti Says There’s Plenty of Pennywise Mythology Left to Explore

The great horror takeover begins next weekend with New Line Cinema’s It: Chapter Two poised to break many box office records.

While most studios would be focused on a massive franchise, the second film, also directed by Andy Muschietti, concludes the faithful two-part adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel. In a nutshell, this was all that was originally planned. And at this time, it’s still all that’s planned.

That being said, there’s a ton of mythology left to explore in the wake of Chapter Two, particularly in regards to Bill Skarsgård‘s Pennywise. Will we ever learn more about the killer clown’s past?

“There is a whole mythology to the book…Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore,” Muschietti tells io9. “It [aka Pennywise] has been on Earth for millions of years. He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material. It’s always exciting to think of eventually exploring this mythology. It’s very exciting.”

For those hoping the studio is already developing a third chapter, Muschietti has some bad news for you: “…For now, there’s nothing on the table.

With It: Chapter Two hoping to break $750M globally, there’s no world in which New Line doesn’t eventually put another film in development, one that would perhaps act as a prequel to the first two chapters. It’s entirely within the realm of possibility, Muschietti’s comments here suggest, even if it’s not actually on the menu at this point in time.

It: Chapter Two opens wide on September 6th.
