New ‘Countdown’ Footage Shows the Audience Losing Their Shit [Video]
What the hell is Countdown, which seemingly came out of nowhere?
For us hardcore horror fans who have been through the wringer once or twice, we’re suspect of Countdown, a new horror movie from STX that’s slipped under all of our radars. Not only does it hail from the company that brought us The Bye Bye Man and The Happytime Murders, but the concept looks like the filmmakers dusted off a screenplay from 1999 that was rejected by New Line Cinema when they pulled the trigger on making Final Destination. All signs point to “no” and yet, I find myself desperately wanting to see Countdown.
Countdown actually does look like a fun throwback to the early 2000s that most studios would have passed on (most probably due to the risk of cell phone technology getting dated quicker than a film can be produced and released). With that said, maybe there’s something special here? Maybe Countdown is actually going to be one of the best treats this overly-packed Halloween season?
This new spot mixes shocking new footage with a crowd’s creation and boy does it sell the film. Pulling some tricks from Paranormal Activity‘s release, the trailer is packed with weird imagery that hopefully doesn’t spoil too much of the movie.
And with that, Countdown is set for release next Friday, October 25th against The Lighthouse with Terminator: Dark Fate and an early release of Doctor Sleep on the horizon. Justin Dec‘s new horror has a lot to overcome, but also feels like some solid counterprogramming that could find an audience in the crowded marketplace. It’s also a solid reminder that there are so many different kinds of horror movies for different kinds of people, and we often take that for granted.
In Countdown, “When a young nurse (Elizabeth Lail) downloads an app that claims to predict exactly when a person is going to die, it tells her she only has three days to live. With time ticking away and death closing in, she must find a way to save her life before time runs out.”

‘Skeletons’ – Creature Feature from ‘Strange Darling’ Director Receives Summer 2027 Release Date
Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner will reunite with their Strange Darling filmmaker JT Mollner for Skeletons, an upcoming creature feature that also stars Brie Larson and John Goodman. We’ve learned this week that it’s releasing in Summer 2027.
Skeletons will release in theaters from Sony on June 4, 2027.
The film’s cast will also include Ione Skye, Keith Carradine and Daithí Ó Haragáin.
From Sony Pictures, Skeletons is said to be a “modern take on the creature horror film.”
J.J. Abrams is producing. Mollner will direct from a script by Brian Duffield (Love and Monsters, No One Will Save You), based on the short story Fail-Safe by Philip Fracassi.
Skeletons is “told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover that his beloved parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.”
The film hails from Infrared, Bad Robot Productions, and Assemble Media.
