[Box Office] ‘Black Christmas’ Remake Melts With $4.42M Opening

Imogen Poots as Riley in "Black Christmas," co-written and directed by Sophia Takal.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s Black Christmas re-remake failed to bring any holiday cheer to moviegoers, landing a D+ CinemaScore and opening to an estimated $4.42M at the box office. It also added $3.1M overseas for a global opening of $7.52M.

The film’s budget was reportedly a mere $5M, which means it won’t take much to get out of the red and into the black. With Universal’s strong international distribution arm, the film could eventually break even.

No matter, this is a massive disappointment for a film that opened unopposed and during the holiday season. The CinemaScore suggests that the holiday-themed slasher didn’t bring much joy to audiences and word of mouth will likely deliver coal under the studios’ Christmas trees.

For the sake of comparison, Dimension’s remake of Black Christmas ended with a $16.2 million domestic total back in 2006, pulling in $21.5 million worldwide.

In the new film directed by Sophia Takal and penned by April Wolfe, Hawthorne College is quieting down for the holidays. One by one, sorority girls on campus are being killed by an unknown stalker.

But the killer is about to discover that this generation’s young women aren’t willing to become hapless victims as they mount a fight to the finish.

Green Room actress Imogen Poots stars with Cary Elwes (Saw, “Stranger Things” 3), Aleyse Shannon (Charmed), Brittany O’Grady (Star), Lily Donoghue (The GoldbergsJane the Virgin) and Caleb Eberhardt (Broadway’s Choir Boy).
