Mama and It director Andy Muschietti started the whispers this past summer when he told press at New Line Cinema’s ScareDiego that he’d love to put his own spin on Joe Dante’s 1981 werewolf classic, The Howling.
Now, he’s apparently speaking it into existence.
While The Hashtag Show reported yesterday that Muschietti will, in fact, direct The Howling for Netflix, this coming from a chat they had with him ahead of a panel he hosted for Underwater, Collider‘s ever-reliable Jeff Sneider reports that there’s no actual deal in place and that talks are still in the early stages, which is very important to note here.
Collider’s sources say that Netflix does have the rights to The Howling, which follows Dee Wallace as a TV newscaster who, left severely traumatized by a near-fatal encounter with a serial killer, takes time off at a secluded retreat where she makes a terrifying discovery.
Joe Dante’s werewolf film was based on Gary Brandner’s same-titled 1977 novel.
