[Trailer] Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson Investigate New Murders in ‘Spiral: From the Book of Saw’
There was a time when we pretty much knew what to expect from the films in the Saw franchise, with eight in total released by Lionsgate between 2004 and 2017. But that all changed when it was announced that Chris Rock(!) had come up with the concept for the latest installment in the franchise, a film he was also set to both star in and executive produce.
Well the wait for our first look is over today, as Lionsgate has just debuted the official teaser trailer for director Darren Lynn Bousman‘s Spiral: From the Book of Saw!
Bousman, who directed Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, returns to the franchise with Spiral, which stars Chris Rock as a police detective investigating a series of grisly crimes. The trailer kicks off with Rock’s character, Detective Banks, getting called to the scene of a gruesome murder, and it’s revealed that the killer has been specifically targeting cops. The killer’s M.O. looks to be leaving behind red spirals at the crime scenes, which would seem to be a reference to the pattern on the cheeks of Jigsaw’s right-hand-man, the creepy puppet known as Billy.
Samuel L. Jackson is playing the father of Rock’s character, and he appears in the trailer as well. A couple traps are teased, including a callback to the original one that started it all.
The trailer, which features a haunting, slowed down version of the franchise’s iconic theme, reminds more of David Fincher’s Se7en than it does any Saw movie we’ve seen before, and that’s very much a compliment. How does this new killer connect to the previous events of the franchise? And will Jigsaw himself (Tobin Bell) be making any sort of appearance in the movie?
We’ll find out this coming May. In the meantime, watch the teaser below.
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
Spiral was written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, from a story by Chris Rock.
The franchise returns to the big screen on May 15, 2020.

How to Watch ‘Cam’ Free Online After the Tech Thriller Left Netflix
Before updating the video nasty Faces of Death, director Daniel Goldhaber and writer Isa Mazzei explored the dangers of online life in tech-thriller Cam, their feature debut that was acquired by Netflix in 2018 after making waves on the festival circuit.
At the end of last year, the Netflix exclusive quietly departed from the streaming platform, left without another streaming home.
It’s not an isolated story; Mike Flanagan’s Hush also left streaming entirely for a period until it was finally picked up on both physical media and other streaming services.
While the tech-thriller currently isn’t available to watch on Netflix, Tubi, Hulu, or any other platforms, that’s not a problem for Cam thanks to a very cool move by Goldhaber: the director has made his breakout film accessible to watch online for free via his website.
As his site notes: “CAM is unfortunately not currently available to view on any platforms, so you can watch it here if you like :).“
No subscriptions or fees necessary, just hit play.
Cam follows Alice (Madeline Brewer), who works as an online cam girl obsessed with her ranking on the cam site. The higher her ranking goes, the more it draws unwanted attention, and Alice soon finds herself replaced on her own show with a doppelganger.
Written by Mazzei, a former camgirl, it uses the horror thriller premise to examine the life of a sex worker; Alice’s career ambition is directly at odds with the shame it brings to her family, and how she tries to spare them from it by keeping them in the dark. It only compounds her danger when the doppelganger enters the equation in Goldhaber’s engaging thriller.
For a deep dive into the treacherous world of Cam, listen to Horror Queers’ episode on it now.
