The rights to the character of Freddy Krueger and the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise he calls home recently reverted back to Wes Craven’s estate, leaving many fans to wonder what the next move will be. When the franchise returns to the big screen, will Robert Englund be playing Freddy Krueger at least one more time or will the story be remade entirely once more?
Englund himself has gone back and forth about playing Freddy over the years, at times saying he’s too old to do it again and at others suggesting he may have one more Elm Street left in him. Aside from reprising the role for a Halloween-themed episode of “The Goldbergs” back in 2018, Englund hasn’t played Freddy Krueger on screen since 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason.
And in a new chat with Entertainment Weekly this week, the horror legend suggests that his cameo appearance on “The Goldbergs” may have been his last hurrah as the Dream Demon.
“I don’t think I’ll ever don the makeup again,” Englund flat out told EW.
He continued, “I’m a little too old for that. I’m a little long in the tooth to play Freddy now. I think if I was doing it, it would be more like Freddy vs. Viagra.”
“But I have no idea whether they’re going to go on and create completely new stories or whether they’re going to go back and do prequels or origin stories on the Freddy Krueger myth. I don’t know what they’re up to. So, I’m just waiting to hear,” Englund added.
It’s hard to imagine Elm Street ever working without Robert Englund, so here’s hoping the right filmmaker can convince him to come back one more time for a proper sendoff.
Not so much because *we* deserve it, but because Englund deserves it.
