Universal Developing a Remake of 1955’s ‘The Night of the Hunter’
In an article right here on Bloody Disgusting, Meagan Navarro recently called 1955’s The Night of the Hunter a “southern Gothic masterpiece,” adding that the Robert Mitchum-starring film is “a beautiful work of art as well as a chilling horror tale that has influenced many modern filmmakers.” We bring the film back up again today because a remake is now in the works.
Variety reports that Universal Pictures is remaking The Night of the Hunter, which was directed by Charles Laughton. The original film was based on Davis Grubb’s same-titled novel.
Matt Orton (Operation Finale) is writing the script for Universal.
“The Night of the Hunter follows a religious fanatic, con man and murderer who marries a widow, knowing that her deceased husband had hid $10,000 from authorities following a bank robbery. The widow’s young children are reluctant to tell him where their real dad hid the money as the man plots more sinister ways to find where to find the cash.”
Amy Pascal and Peter Gethers will produce the new take on the material.
Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu) is back later this year with new horror movie Werwulf, and the very first teaser image from the hotly anticipated movie has surfaced tonight.
Oddly enough, this first look comes courtesy of the NBC Store, and it gives us a glimpse at a chilly Winter landscape from the film. Is there a werewolf hiding in the photo? Maybe…
Set in 13th century England, Werwulf sees a mysterious creature stalk the land as local folklore becomes a terrifying reality. The film hits theaters on December 25 via Focus Features.
Robert Eggers recently teased, “It’s the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”
Eggers directs from a script he penned with his The Northman co-writer Sjón.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu), Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Ralph Ineson (The Witch), and Bodhi Rae Breathnach (Hamnet) star.
Robert Eggers and Sjón produce alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title. Maiden Voyage’s Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are executive producing.
